In light of what just happened to Iffy's guitar I thought I'd relate what just happened to my 1712. Altho not as drastic as the bridge lifting, it was just as heart wrenching. I bought the 1712 a few months ago and it was without a mark on it, the only older model O without and surface cracks. About 6 weeks ago I opened the case and to my horror a huge crack along the lower bout. Then 2 days later I opened the case and another longer crack along the top bout. Everyone always told me keeping the guitars in the cases would help with keeping them safe with the humidity and all that. I'm still wondering what I did wrong?

Are they Finish cracks or through wood cracks .. are you sure it`s the right case .. Ovi cases can be slightly different in size, causing strain in the wrong places.. also , when it is too dry , that dryness will creep into the case as well.

Humidity level inside a case is the same as outside the case. It may take longer to normalize if you move the case from one environment to another, but unless your case contains an artifical source of moisture you are not protected.

They are just finish cracks. I never knew that about the cases, the previous owner said this case came with this guitar.
I always learn something from you guys. I believe I did have a humidifier in the guitar. That was the other reason I was kinda shocked.

I share your sorrow, Anita.

I keep Herco Humidifiers in my cases.
I also keep a room humidifier in my room, but the room is only 42% at this moment.
Even with the humidity at that level, the Humidifiers in the case will go bone dry eventually.
Depending on the ambient humidity of the room, you need to check the case humidifier every week.

Personally, I am not convinced the in-the-case humidifiers do any substantial good. The amount of water they move into the air is quite small, and it diffuses out of the case pretty quickly.

Has anyone put a hygrometer into a case to see what the increase in humidity is?

My Morgan Monroe cases have built-in hygrometers. My guitars in cases with humidifiers stay around 50%. The EMPTY cases have been known to get down to 30%. That tells me the humidifiers are doing their job. I re-moisten them about once a week.
