They will have Ovation necks with the options of Maple/Mahogany and Maple or Ebony FBs. One is a Two Board Maple with a Koa Top and the other in a four Board Maple with a Spalted Maple Top, likely to go sunburst. I'd like your input on what set ups to do. I'm a non-trem kinda guy but give it a shot.

Since I chambered the Spalt top I think it might get a Tele Bridge with Piezo saddles. Toss in aset of Singles with a 4 way switch and an Active X preamp and have a Texas VXT.

Ergo, I would go for a variety in each guitar, without a bridge pickup. A neck pickup that is a classic tone. Something PAFish or maybe a Rio BBQ for a more aggressive sound, but not metal. In the middle, a Strat voiced humbucker. DiMarzio makes one that sounds quite good as a Strat sound and also retains the benefits of a humbucker. A piezo bridge for that acoustic-ish sound. In this dream world, I'd have two output jacks. One would be mono as any other guitar would have. The second jack would be stereo so that the piezo could be sent to a separate amp than the humbuckers.

Tune-o-matic bridges are pretty hard to beat...simple and effective. For pickups, my prefered pairing is Seymour Duncans...SH-1 and SH-11, wired just like a Les Paul. And I am likewise not a big fan of Trem. I mostly go for bending and sustain. Oh, and go a little on the big side for fret wire...perhaps even a 'zero fret'? For the fingerboard, if you want something a little different...I am building my guitars out of Jatoba (Brazilian Cherry) it is much harder than rock maple, but not quite as hard as ebony...it is somewhere around 2300 on the Janka scale. I am building the entire guitar out of it, but for a fingerboard it should be plenty hard enough. I think it would be an interesting choice in terms of color contrast for those bodies. Another one I really like is Brazilian Walnut, but it is not good for an application where there is no finish...it has some very bad eye and skin irritation attributes, but it has this REALLY cool irridescent green over top of the red wood color. It also is a very hard wood though. But I think you would be instantly sorry if you rubbed your eye after playing a guitar with a fingerboard made of that. Just some of my own thoughts...

I intend to reuse some of my Ovation Viper and Breadwinner necks but one day I hope to make some. I have been cautioned about working with some of the exotic woods and how their beauty and uniqueness is tied to their toxicity in a lot of cases. Pure Tung Oil or Lacquer are my finishes of choice. Hopefully no instrument ships with an MSDS attached! Anyone know where I can get some of that Russian Uranium Glass for some Tuner knobs? M(Homeland Insecurity will be watching now)Woody

Woody, for what it's worth, the wood grain is really pretty, but Beal's comment is EXACTLY what I was thinking when I saw that "bell-looking-thingy". And that handle looks like a gynecologist's instrument ... However, you get a "E" for effort, anyway. It's nice to have a good belly laugh first thing in the morning. I highly recommend it. ;) Willa

For the bridge I'd use a Carvin like set up with string thru body construction. I wouldn't use a trem. I'd put the vol and tone knobs not so close to the bridge, and use a volume pedal instead if I wanted swells.

It now is chambered and has a Spalt Maple top on it. I'm leaning towards a Piezo Tele Bridge and roller nut set up. I don't intend to use the Big-ol-Trem on anything just yet. I have a twelve Twelve String Neck and an ABR Bridge that may end up on the Maple Deacon. I'm still twitching over pickups. Three Single Coil Lipstick pickups would look cool but I'm not sure about the sound. The Koa Viper is pencilled in for the Filter-trons and a psuedo-archtop on a solid look. As soon as I learn how to succesfully bend Mahogany sides I have some Ric Body plagerizing to do as well. And there is a Varitone thingy in the parts bin... Of course, everything is up for change depending on what flavor Cool-Aid I have with dinner.
