Joined: August 2009 Posts: 381 Location: Miami | Will the mothership repair an Ovation if I'm not the original owner and don't have any warranty papers? I own several O's, some I have bought with the papers, others through ebay and Craiglist. One of them (a 93 collectors) could use a whole new top, and it's not something anyone other than the mothership could do. Do they do this, and how much should I expect that to run me? (I wanted to ask here before I asked there. I've emailed them several times on other occasions and they haven't been too responsive or helpful.)

If it is a non-warranty repair the only way to get an accurate repair cost is to pony up for shipping and send it to them....then wait for their estimate and decide whether or not you want them to do the repairs. They will often make recommendations on what work they feel should be done which might increase or decrease what you were expecting to pay.

On one occasion I asked if there was any model that might have the slimmed down neck of the Elite T. They told me in no uncertain terms that no other Ovation will have a slimmed down neck. I found a few Ovations later that that's just not true. Not a huge deal, just pretty wrong information. I posted here about it and some former employees confirmed that lots of O's will go out with slimmed down necks, whether they're advertised that way or not, and that it's really luck of the draw. Perhaps it was not politically correct for customer support to state in so many words, but whatever. The misinformation did stop me from even considering other models, including Adamases, until I found otherwise. Your last statement surprises me. I've had nothing but outstanding service from them including answering my emails. On a different occasion I inquired if I could custom order an American Elite T, as I wasn't interested in the changes they made to the TX. To make a long story short, they suggested that the TX was made of essentially the same parts but assembled overseas (obviously not true, as I would consider the fretboard, the bracing, and the top quite essential parts) and then told me it would cost me upwards of $5000 and with management approval. (!) If that's true, it still felt like a "don't bother me" response and here's the reason for my comment. It's not so much whether the information given was accurate (and in both instances it could be argued that it was not the most accurate information), but the way in which I was said. Both of my inquiries began with some really heartfelt thanks to the company and its guitars and how proud I've been for years to be an O player. And my questions were very specific (and numbered). The responses were always straight to the point one-liners with no "thank you's" or "great to hear that!" or "sorry to hear that!" or any of the typical customer-friendly things you want to hear in an email. I don't want mushy responses, but they were definitely not what I would call "outstanding service". I don't question that you have gotten great service from them. I had a great experience with an O rep I met in Miami and with a second (former) O employee and current Fender rep I also met here. I may have gotten someone in the mothership on a bad day or two.
