OK, OK...

Here's the whole story.

Last spring I happened into a GC in Allentown, PA while travelling. Being within 20 minutes of Nazareth, PA, they tend to have some nicer than usual Martins hanging, but they are usually well out of reach. But this time, a D-42 happened to be hanging right at eye level.

Now I've played several Marting D's up to the D-35, and while I found them to be great guitars, I could never justify the cash required to grab one. So I figured this would have a similar result. Still, a little voice on my left shoulder (don't know if it had a halo or horns) said picking it up would be a BAADDD idea!

The voice was right. I've never been so impressed with a woodbox in my life. It looked fantastic. It sounded like Martins are supposed to sound. (A difficult feat considering the way Martin lovers fall all over themselves about the dreadnaught mystique.) And it even fit me physically. (I find it to be very comfortable to hold. Again, quite a feat for someone who's been playing turtlebacks for over 20 years.)

Anyway, I couldn't get it out of my head! And after several months, decided that maybe I could make it work with fair slices of luck, patience, and finagling. (Did I spell that right?)

It was actually a lot of effort, but it obviously paid off. In the end, I chased one down for about $2350, which is a steal for this instrument. From that price , I deducted the trade value for an 1117.

The rest of the money came from selling my 1537 and my Custom Legend 12-string. I've had them for a while. So if you count what I had in them as opposed to what the guitar actually cost, I got it for well under 2K.

As far as Collings guitars go, I've never seen one in person. And that particular fact was what led me to buying this Martin. I had no real interest in buying one until I actually picked one up first. And at the 2K level, we're probably talking about a mahogany Collings anyway, and I'm not super keen on 'hogs. But you never know.

Still, those who hang around here will be pleased to know that my next two guitars will be Ovations. They're being rebuilt at the factory as we speak and should both arrive by February...maybe sooner.

Just wait 'til you see them. ;)

Mice Git.

OK...............

Tell you what, don't even think about a Collings.
Enjoy the hell out of what you just got, it's a great guitar and a great deal.

Now sometime in the future you can think about the C word and you're right it will be much more.

But savor this moment.

Don't worry Beal, I think about Collings, and other high end guitars, all the time. But truthfully, they're way beyond my budget.

As far as savoring this moment goes, you betcha!

I used to like Collins but i think they must be going through a bad batch. Kinda like Gibson did a while back.

Patch,

Very nice guitar. I was in Allentown around the first of November. I went to the Martin factory.

All I got was a T-Shirt. :(

Yep....guitar is actually darker in person. Top is considered aged toner and while I wouldn't want all my gits to look that way having a few around offsets the nakedness of the plain vanilla spruce tops.

course you don't really notice it close up cause the 42 bling temporarily blinds ya!

Patch....that is a GREAT price. You should really be happy and enjoy the heck out of that one!

Why does this ring a bell with me?

Hey Patch, a dread eh? Funny that just bought my very first D shape (Seagull Peppino). It'll be interesting to see what they're like for fingerstyle.

Patch,

Very nice. To my ear, there is noticeable inconsistency in sound of Martins even in "identical" models. However, when you find one that sounds "right" they are admittedly special. (As you said "it sounds like a Martin is supposed to sound.")

Between the Siren's call (remember, they lead you to the rocks… ;) ) and the great deal you negotiated, plus the time and consideration you spent, I, for one, forgive you and understand…

…except for that part about the "trade value" of a 1117… whatever they allowed, it wasn't enough… ;)

I agree about re-sale values and Ovations, but I can't do much about it. FWIW, I would have sold it to an OFC member for less than GC gave me for it.
