Wow, who would have thought Matt Smith, Pat Metheny, Larry Carlton etc would come to my little town in MT ....

I hope that there are some public performances associated with this. My excitement for the workshop has been tempered by the cost ($1700 without accomodations, $4000 with). I can pay for 3 years of weekly lessons for that.

For that kind of money, you might be able to set something up direct with him in Austin. He told me that he does private lessons upon request and schedule permitting.

And he's a great guy as well. Anytime you can squeeze in a workshop with him, do it. You won't regret a second of it.

If he's coming to you, try to do it if you can. I've talked to a couple people that went to these "camps" and they really liked them. You could spend $1700 just getting down to Austin to see him.
I'd really like to see DiGrassi, too. He did a one night concert here a couple years ago, but I was out of town.

If you go to workshops with Larry Carlton and Matt Smith you'll learn a hell of a lot more from Matt.
Hugely gifted teacher.

Maybe I can invite him over for all of the sailing and brats and beer that he wants and he can just jam with my family/garage band ...

It would be great to go for 1 day, I just think by the end of 1 day my hands and arms would be falling off. Has anyone done a 5 day workshop before?

If I didn't have a conflict, I'd be begging you to put me up so we could both go.
You live in a beautiful area Scott. Maybe you should host the next NW OFC gathering. I'd come just for the beer, brats and sailing.

That Montana workshop looks good. Alex does a 3-day, 12-student workshop in July for $600. Location is near Santa Cruz, California.

I saw Alex and Peppino D'Agostino two nights ago, and last night Vicki Genfan, Jill Knight, and Erika Luckett. It has been a good week!

Alex showed me the way his Fred Carlson Sympitar is built, with the 12 sympathetic strings internal to the neck. They have a flat topped metal bridge behind the soundhole, that gives them a buzz like a sitar.

Cheers,

Mark

Hey Mark, if folks are interested in an OFC gathering in this area I'm sure I could arrange something. Another event that might make it worth traveling to MT is the National Folk Festival in Butte, July 9-11, 2010:
