Nice, and it's not a new one, even better. Best to learn that new isn't always the best present.

He needs to be careful it doesn't slide off his leg, I've heard that can happen sometimes if you're not careful.

There is nothing in life as satisfying as helping kids get into music! He will thank you for the rest of his life. Congratulations!

Folklore or Classical? either way a great choice, and both excellent sounding guitars. the -4 in the background with the low-slung bridge looks familiar ;)

Nice present Dad!!

That's great, and a beautiful guitar too, I gotta get around to finding a slot-head for myself one of these days :)
My Boy about flipped when I got him that old 77 CB when I was home on leave.
I can't wait to get back and play with him.

Looks like a classical from the late 70's, early 80's. Great gift.....

I think it's a Folklore Paul.

Yep, its a folklore. Mid 80s. He has been playing on my old parlor guitar for just about a year and is doing great. It is fun to see him not be able to walk by a guitar without picking it up for a quick play.
He liked the wider neck of the parlor so a folklore seemed to be a natural fit. He really likes my UTE but...

. . . or the diameter of the tuners, the shape of the bridge, and radius neck (or that it's strung w/STEEL strings!).

The tuners are actually silver. That is the light reflecting on them. Yes the bridge and the steel strings are a giveaway. :)
Johnny, it has a couple of surface cracks that I sealed up, and a few headstock nicks that I sanded and laquered. I set it up as low as I can and it seems to play nice. He is getting used to the neck shape but I think it will work great for him. (I still have my eye on your burst :) )
I would have like to have gotten him a new one, just because it would be new and I really like the idea of supporting my favorite guitar manufacturer but the funding was not there. In any case the 1614 is one of the all time gems and the history that goes with it is really cool. We watched Cat Stevens ripping Peace Train on youtube with a smile on our faces.

Rich,

Not sure if it's the lighting, but it sure looks as though that top is maturing to the 'nutmeg' stage!

The 1614 is a finger picker's 'O' dream. Deep bowl, A braced, slot head... what's not to like.

BTW, check your email...

That's a great looking guitar. The history of the model makes it much more interesting than a regular new guitar and he'll always remember the loving gift rather than whether or not it was new.

Yea, it is really ageing to a beautiful color. I thought my K1115 that was rebuilt was starting to turn a nice color until I put it next to this one (it looks like me at the beach). Check out the pics, and note how the much darker the 69 pacemaker neck is than the 85 folklore:
