Well I meant to get 6 songs done, but it looks like I may only get 5.

As Mark IB said in another thread, my band will be playing at a benefit for his daughter's friend and orphanage. This put the fire under my ass to get this EP done. I was planning on charging $5 per 6 song CD, but it now it's down to 5 songs.

5 songs for $5... fair?

The second half of this post is so all my OFC friends can have 'em for free!

Plus I'd like some feedback. I know there's some mixing issues, but I needed it done by tomorrow, so it is what it is...

Hence the name of the EP.... "Good For Now"

And to keep this on topic, the Ovations used were...

Electrics
UKII (duh!)
VXT
Viper
Tornado

Acoustics
1537-1
Beal's ol' Book Elite

And a bonus! My bass player decided to use my Magnum IV for one of the tunes. Can you guess which?

And the songs (also on my Ning)...

Fantasy

Complicated

Comfortable

Take You Down

Slave

Sure! I mean... You could charge $4.50 or $4...
But let's not split hairs or pinch pennies.
If the people like your music it is worth it.

I listened to the tracks through the Ning site (then my connection went down)
But I don't have any critical info about any mixing issues.
It sounds good to me.

Well, since there are on-line sites that charge you about a buck apiece to download songs, I don't think you're out of line at all.
Since I still listen to cds and don't have an Ipod ("Grandma Dinosaur Syndrome" sufferer that I am ;) :D ), if I could get a momento from a concert that didn't kill my pocketbook, I'd be glad to buy one. (Disclaimer: The previous statement is not meant to imply that buying, listening to, or owning cds indicates that anyone else suffers from the above-referenced syndrome. ;) )

Great stuff Damon! The recording sounds real good too, the Ovations really shine on the recording. I like the songs a lot, easily worth $5.

It sounds better than 95% of what you hear on the radio.

Damon, mixes and songs sound great from here. $5 is more than fair for an EP. Around here the high school and college kids look to get about $7 or $8 for an EP at one of their shows. If there are ten or more songs they will look to get about $12. And that's teens selling to teens.

Ima big believer in the artists getting paid fairly for their work. $5 is underpaid really.

Price is right.

I listened quickly to Complicated before heading out the door. Mix sounds right >on my speakers< though I personally would have the harmonies up one CCH, or eq to achieve similar effect. But that's hair splitting ;-)

Great stuff all 'round, both the music and the gig.

I just listened to "complicated" and agree with phil...you need to boost the harmonies just a bit.

really nice tune

Thanks peoples. Good info. This is what I need.

FlySig, how are these kids packaging their EPs? Artwork and all, or more Sharpie on a disk?

Mike, I like that one too. It's all creamy UKII on that one. I tried to think of what would happen if you spliced the guitar playing genes of Carlos Santana with Gary Moore.

Phil and Stephen, I agree. Actually, they just need to be rerecorded and remixed. I added the harmonies at the very end. I spent maybe 30 minutes on 3 songs including recording and editing. A rush job for sure. If you think Complicated is bad, Slave is horrible. I almost don't want to put it on.

I plan to listen to them all a bit later when I can sit in the studio and listen on some good monitors.

I am sure that I will like them all based on the first one I heard.

Damon, mostly the productions are pretty good but not professional. Some of the real counter-culture types do a sharpie on the disk, but most are printed or use that laser writing technology. The kids are very computer savvy and have no trouble doing a little artwork. Some use a printed cardboard sleeve, some use a plastic box.

I also see a lot of t-shirts and small posters, usually when there is a parent involved who is really promoting their kids or a college age group promoting themselves.

We get a lot of college acts touring on a shoestring.

Well time's leaning toward the sharpie for this time 'round. I have a printer that does disks, but that'll have to wait. It takes special inks and it's running low. I can only find the ink online.

I like the bumpersticker idea. Does anyone still do buttons?

OK, gotta get back to doin' stuff.

Damon, don't mess with it anymore. Dig this quote from a Steve Miller interview.

"And when I was talking to Paul, I finally got to know him well enough to (ask him about The Beatles). He said, “People thought we were so brilliant. Man, we just tossed that stuff off so fast.” And I was just having this come-to-Jesus kind of conversation with him. He said, “You know, I wish that I had taken more time with a lot of tunes.” And I’m thinking to myself, “Yeah? Which one?” You know? What could be (improved upon)? They just kicked that stuffout.

It’s funny, because when I worked with Paul…first of all, he called me up and said, “Will you come and sing with me?” And I went, “I’m so tired of carrying you people.” (laughs) “You guys. Who gave you my number? You tell Sinatra…” (laughs) But finally I said, “Why don’t you come over to my place? I’ve got a great studio and everything.” So he brings his engineer. He brings Linda, brings the kids. Brings Stella, brings James. They all come. They all stay. And we’re all recording. And any time I would ever go, “Let’s do (another take).” He’d go, “There you go again.” It’s always the first take and the only take. There was never any more. "

The Link

The sound is great. The band is tight and clean.
It's all a take. Work on the next ones, you're done.

I particularly like the opening to Fantasy starting out on one side and coming into the middle.

Forgive my ignorance of the genre, are any of these originals?

....Last I saw, buttons were still a relatively easy and effective promo give-away. (but remember, I'm REALLY old) On the other hand, why give stuff away when you can get merch (t-shirts, hats, beer koozies) so cheap and sell them at gigs? It's more cash in the band account!

I am honoured (note correct spelling please) to see you using the pic I shot of you on your site. I think it almost completely captures the you I'd recognize. A little more twinkle in the eye would be good, but if I recall we were all well along in the various samplings
at that point. ;-)
