I guess some of the best answers to this question would probably come from the OFC members who have traveled to different events together and switch off & play each others guitars.
Can you notice a difference between the same models when you play someone elses even though the strings might be different and the action set differently are there any big differences that you notice or are they pretty steady in popping out the same consistincy of guitar model?I guess this could be a loaded question since wood/plastic,carbon fibre batches may all vary from batch to batch.I know that when I bought my Fender Thinline I played about seven different ones and every single one had a bit something different about it.
I guess I ask this because so many of us buy guitars unseen on E-Bay , Musicians Freind ,Lost Art and yet we have never touched or felt them.
Any thoughts? GWB

Do you mean differences between several different models, or several examples of the same model?

What I've noticed is that there's more consistency among Ovation/Adamas models than any other brand of production guitars I've played.
If anything, it's the occasional outstanding example that pops out.

Wabbit,It sounds like you would feel fine about having played a certain model # at one time and ordering it online from a store or E-Bay without any reserves that it might not perform like the one that you actually played ? If so that is a HUGE complement to the consistency of a great guitar company. GWB

Never played a bad USA Ovation or Adamas and have played a few truly exceptional ones.

Ditto Wabbit, and I only do some of the solidbody electrics. Attention to detail is top-notch. Some are different than others, but of the USA made models, you simply can't buy better guitars. Different and/or just as good perhaps, but not better. At ANY price.

I made an interesting experience concerning the sound of two nearly identical guitars. Last year OFCer Kurt purchased a Josh White reissue and I let the mothership made a rebuild of my original Josh White (new top and bowl). Both guitars have nearly the same specification (12-fret to the body, X-bracing). The only difference is a 3-piece-top versus a 2-piece-top. But they sound completely different. I've played them side-by-side: The reissue is warm and mellow whereas my rebuild sounds very crisp. Doubt that the reason is the amount of top pieces. I guess the specific pieces of wood they used for the tops makes the difference.

I've also played Kurt's and my #47RI side-by-side and there is no soundwise difference at all. My conclusion is that Adami are far more consistent in sound than wood-top Ovations (and other brands) are.

Generally pretty consistent, but there are certainly differenes from guitar to guitar. Some just have a little more of "it" than others. They're consistent enough that you pretty much know what you're gonna get sight unseen which is good for a buyer. The downside is that you better like the sound of it because all copies of that same model are gonna be quite similar.

Beat me to it CW.

gwb can you not get over this "look at me, look at me" thing with the capital letters? Are your posts always the most important thing on the post listing?
It is just so ill-mannered.

To my ears, the surprise standouts are those older models that have been very well cared for, but have otherwise been played hundreds of hours, maybe thousands. Damon's 1537 and Mark's original slothead No. 43 come to mind. There was an old Balladeer at the PNW Fan Gathering that also had a wonderful sound. I think my 1651 Legend Ltd and Adamas 1881 SSB also come close to being in this category. My guess is that most of the USA Ovations and Adamas models have this potential. They just need to be played to bring it out. Maybe this is the mojo we are all in search of.

I think that was Damon's Deluxe Balladeer. It had that "classic" Ovation sound.
I've now played 3 of the OFC guitars and couldn't tell the difference in sound. Mine plays lighter because I took out the shims.
Tony said he could tell the difference between his #47RI and his OFC, but I couldn't. The only differences in the same models that I've noticed could be attributed to the strings or the action.

Some have the same model numbers and are called the same thing, but have different bracings and or truss rods and or electronics.

Apples to Oranges sometimes

Really that Deluxe Balladeer is a Legend with V bracing (1117-4)

Actually, the Deluxe Balladeer, a shiny bowl, had X bracing, no binding around the neck, chrome hardware, and fewer inlays than the Legend. The Legend, in the 1970's, had VT-11 bracing, neck binding, gold hardware, and more inlays on the neck.

The Custom Balladeer, built in the 70's and 80's, had X bracing, the same inlays as the Legend, but no neck binding, and chorme hardware.

My 1187-247 and 1187-7 Custom Order are substantially the same guitars except for the colour.

Soundwise they are very close, but when it comes to volume, the beige beats the red one big time. No clue, why.

Best regards,
Kurt

Edit: Hey, this was my 400th post. Never thought, I'd make it. But don't panic, I will not switch my name to something else. I'll only add a "Man Machine" to the "Koenig Kurt".

So, best regards,

Kurt aka Man Machine

Red is pretty loud to begin with. It just makes the beige try that much harder. ;)
