What is the standard string spacing for the Ovation Elite. I know the neck is 1 11/16, my string spacing seems to be 1 6/16 seems narrower than many of my other guitars.
Thanks,
Steve

Don't know the answer, but I've stumbled upon the same thing. It's easy to change, and I had a few after market nuts cut for some of mine. I generally prefer a little wider spacing than standard (what ever that is).

I had a narrow neck 60's Gibson J-45 that I had a local shop cut a new nut and it made that guitar much more playable. The neck nut width on that guitar is only 1 9/16, and he got her spaced out wider than this current O. Funny played the guitar a lot but so used to current guitars now with wider spacing, probably need to do that, it was only 25 buck I think and the guy is a master at this stuff.

OK, you got me curious, so I broke out my trusty calipers.

Elite 1537, 1987 Collectors, and Adamas 1687, as well as the Custom Legend 1619, are all exactly 1-13/32" string spacing. The nuts are all 1-11/16", except the 1537 which is 1/64" shorter (1-43/64"). The 2008 Collector has a wide neck (1-3/4" nut, 1-17/32" string spacing), and the Elite 1538 12-string has a 1-7/8" nut and 1-21/32" string spacing. The viper is the narrowest, as you'd expect for an electric, at 1-19/32" nut and 1-5/16" string spacing.

I have three supposed 1-3/4" nut guitars (one being the fabulous, beat2crap Larry I bought from said g8r). None have the same string spacing at the nut OR the saddle. It seems to me that it's all willy-nilly when it comes to nuts and string spacing.

Nothing like a bunch of guys sitting around taking about their nuts. Remind me to keep my legs crossed around G8r

Yeah, definitely keep 'em crossed. G8r has a very big fist.

Bottom line is that I have plenty of room to spread out my string spacing, I think it is a little two narrow.

:D

Steve, you should be able to have a new nut cut with about 3/32" increase in spacing, E to e. Any more than that and you might run into problems with string bends. You also need to make sure whoever cuts your nut knows what they're doing. The one thing you never want to hear from your nut-cutter (or Mohel) is "Oops!"

Coincidentally, I was just looking at tusq nuts and saddles on the net, and it looked like the nuts were already cut for you with regards to spacing. But the guy who made my last guitar hand rasped the nut grooves. ??????

Bob Colosi for high quality blanks or superb custom work, or StewMac for blanks and files and any other lutherie supplies you never knew you needed.

There is a great shop near me, he cut a new nut for my 1967 J-45 with a neck width of only 1 9/16's. It took him cutting two nuts cause he wasn't satisfied but he got the most out of it. It is wider separation than some of my 1 11/16 necks. Made a huge difference. He is the man.
