Location: Milford, MI | Thanks for the quick reply. There is one on ebay that the seller states is a 1979 and gives a serial# that is correct for a 1979, but no truss rod cover.
Hmmm! Replaced neck? |

But if they have a Rainbow label, they have the K-Bar neck.

Location: Parkersburg, WV | If I recall, there was a thread awhile back concerning the transition in the '70s from the foil labels to the paper ones. No one was really sure exactly when they started the change and with which models but there were several conflicts. More than likely this is actually a 1712 that was mislabeled during the transition period. By the photos it is definitely a Custom Balladeer and with no rod cover, should be a 1712.

I guess it might just be a fine line on the change over. |

Location: Parkersburg, WV | The 16**'s used the original truss rod which was adjusted from the headstock and covered with a rod cover. The 17**'s introduced the Kaman Bar which was adjusted from inside the bowl.

Patsbro Here is my 1612 Beater... It has a Rainbow Label and No TRC.
But it is a 1612.
Either that, or that mislabeling is a really common mistake.

Location: Sydney | I don't know, there apparently was a transition period when bracings changed and Kbars came in.
I have a 1617 1979 Legend with rainbow label and also truss rod cover. Must have been one of the interchange ones, because it also has A bracing.
Go figure! I'd just trust the serial number and bear in mind the changes that came in 79/80? |
