Never mind the weird peghead, those aren't even the same guitars in the 2 pics provided in the ad. Different epaulet inlays, different fret markers. Caveat emptor.

Well, the neck/headstock looks like a Japanese / Korean made Diodati.

The body does look like an Ovation. Definitely not one of Diodati's "normal" stock bodies.

I think the pics actually match, just a lighting trick that makes the components look a bit different.

Does anyone know if Diodati guitars are any good?

Can't say I really like the parrots but I like the idea of somehow customizing the epaulettes.

Those autumn leaves or whatever they are get a bit boring after a while.

I don't know much about the 1758, but I have a 1658 that I dearly love. Is the 1758 mearly the Elite version of the 1658? Other than the sound holes, are there other differences?

The differences in bracing alone necessitated by the traditional soundhole versus the epaulets will have a pronounced and distinct effect on the tone of the guitar. It's not quite comparing apples to oranges, but there are enough such differences that each style has its own distinct tonal characteristics. Whether one is "better" than the other is entirely subjective.

True, true.

I've always preferred the tone of a traditional soundhole.

Body depth, top materials, electronics all the same?

I really wish Ovation had kept the old archives section when they changed the website; used to be easy to get this info by doing a simple search...

If I remember right, both are deep bowl, non-cut, and both have AA spruce tops. I believe the 1758 started with the OP24 pre-amp, but later production may have changed.

I can only compare a Pacemaker (round hole) to a 1538, as those are the ones I've owned. The Pacemaker is a monster guitar, probably because of it's being a 12-fret-to-body. Deep and loud, it's among the best 12ers I've played, very in-your-face, great when you want to cut through a bunch of other instruments. The 1538, although not quite as loud as an Adamas 12er, still has that "Adamas-esque" flavor to its tone, albeit a bit more woody. It's a bit more balanced and subtle than the Pacemaker, so to me it's better suited to backing up vocals.

Speaking of epaulets, either he moved the holes around (Unlikely) or that ain't an Ovation.

Plus it is missing some holes.
It does not have an Ovation preamp and the preamp is in the wrong place.
It ain't an O.
(Wouldn't you have kept the O case instead of shipping this unique guitar in a gig-bag?]

Well,
I just heard from the seller and he states it IS an Ovation that's been customized by Pete Diodati. Part of a limited run.

Preamp is an EQ-9710. I can't find that on Ovation's or Jerome's websites but maybe one of you know something about that model and can share info.

Ask him for a side view.

Or just ask him for a view of the label, or the manhole cover, or the "Made in USA" thingie inside the bowl.

I did but the photo isn't clear enough to make out much about the preamp. Do you know anything about the EQ-9710?

The label states Diodati model #WOS-4009. Diodati Guitars, New Hampshire etc.

What is the "Made in USA" thingie inside the bowl? Kind of hard to ask a question if I'm not clear what I'm asking about.

That is not a number for an Ovation preamp.
Does it have slanted sliders, like all those other knock-off guitars.
It might have been an Ovation bowl from a dumpster, and maybe the same for the bridge.
But the holes in the epaulets are not made to the Ovation pattern...
They don't even match left-to-right.

"What is the "Made in USA" thingie inside the bowl?"
All the molded bowls, even Celebrity's, say "Made in USA" in raised letters inside the bowl.

Here we go, look at it this way...
If I had a Custom-Made guitar that I wanted $900 for I would be able to supply a perspective buyer a decent photo. Unless I didn't want you to have a decent photo.

A fuller search finds that Pete Diodati has a shop in Exeter NH and sells many solid body guitars with his name on the headstock Here ... But they are made in Korea. Pete Diodati Home Page...

Save your money... Somewhere there is a company that sells Mother-of-Toiletseat epaulets for Ovations.
I see them on da Bay all the time... Except when I am looking for them.

But the person selling this guitar is probably no relation to Pete Diodati.

I don't believe Diodati guitars is still in business even if a website is still up and running. Most, I believe, were actually built in Japan and according to some of the reviews I remember reading a few years back, were actually pretty good MIJ guitars. Although I personally have never actually seen one much less played one.

Thanks for the "Made in USA" info; most of my Ovations are glass bowls so I had no idea the later ones had a stamp inside - I'll have to check out that Celebrity bass I bought from you.

And just to be clear, I don't know the seller nor am I interested in purchasing this guitar; I simply like to have the facts before accusing a seller of trying to pull off some kind of scam.
