I posted about 4 days ago about a 72 Balladeer Brown Burst for sale at a Daddys Junky music store in Dartmouth Mass.I bought it.Could not help myself.
Now for the guitar porn.
It was hanging there with a with one of those wooden pickups wedged in the sound hole, missing Ovation lable, very dark brown finish.Serial # lable still there.013718.
1/4 inch hole drilled in the back of the bowl, very neat, cannot see it if you were not looking for it.It was for the soundhole pickup.
Once again, strange guitar, looks like it is brand new.No play wear anywhere on the guitar. But there is no question it is a 72 Balladeer.
Paid 200 for it.Once again, salesmen had no clue.
Even though the inside metal lable is missing, you can see the imprint of it.1111-4.
One more thing I have never seen on an "O".
Under the truss rod cover in the slot to the nut is hand written in red ink is 1111-4.Very faint.
This is my 4th O from the late 60's and early 70's.These guitars are so perfect in all areas, quality, performence, looks, mojo, whatever the catagory.

The -4 should be a Natural finish. Perhaps it was refreshed at one time.

Still a steal as they are quality made.

The color and finish is stock.
Trust me on this one, anybody can tell if a guitar has been sanded and "Refinished".
Guitars are like cars and trucks. You can tell if they have a "Fresh" coat of paint.

I can't speak to the finish on your 1111 (congrats, BTW, nice get!), but I might argue your second point. Done professionally - especially by the folks who built the guitar to begin with - you probably couldn't tell. Case in point, my 87C. This is what it looked like when Samova had it before he sent it to the Mothership:

This is it today:
