According to the Ovation book (which I really need to buy, btw) the Moosup aluminum/plywood guitar developed in '74 or so ultimately became the Medallion/Matrix. What we know as the original Applause guitar was almost an afterthought.

I viewed the patent info on Jerome's site for the aluminum necked guitar dated late '74 and it is obviously a Matrix.

So which actually went into production first, the Matrix or Applause? And was there ever really a "Medallion" model produced or was the trademark issue settled before any were actually labeled as such?

Minutiae, I know.

The Medallion was produced... at least one :)

And to my knowledge, Matrix/Medallion was first, then Applause.

Applause was first.
When it was ready to launch at the June 75 NAMM show Ovation Marketing shit themselves and said to the powers that be "You can't do this to us, it will kill our sales!"(See they always thought it was a bad joke that would never get off the ground. Very forward thinking)
So it changed from an Applesause to Medallion.
That lasted several months till some little dealer came forward and said I own that name, so it changed to Matrix.
Applause came the following year, June 76 and was launched along with it's big brother, Adamas.
