Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Spent some time with our keyboard player in the bandroom this past weekend. He has been taking guitar lessons and borrowing my ‘84 Legend SSB. He has the only Ovation in a class of 15 beginning students. Most of the guitars being used in the class are presumably lower priced wood boxes, and several students commented early in the semester that Ovations sound thin because they lack a supposedly more resonant wood box. Imagine that. These snobbish attitudes about Ovations start pretty early in a guitarist’s life. No matter, after two months, they all have come to appreciate how that little Legend is able to cut through the mix. Even the teacher has commented on its clarity and tone. At least two other students have now stated that they are looking at Ovations at GC. I don’t know how the Celebrity models hanging on the walls at GC would compare to this old Legend SSB, but nothing sells an ovation better than hearing one in person over time. And they don’t have a clue how comfortable and easy it is to play compared to most other beginner guitars, nor how good it sounds plugged in. I’m thinking about letting him take one of the deep bowls to class, or possibly even an Adamas, but then I might never get it back. On the other hand, this is the same guy who is awaiting a custom order from Collings, compliments of his in-laws. |

His Birthday present last year was a beater $75 77 Custom Balladeer I got him to see if he was going to stick with the playing and he really has.
His 13th Birthday is tomorrow and I'm giving him the absolutely beautiful 1718 I got from Kotadawg when I got back from Iraq.
I'd say he's doing allright by Ovation standards, owning two before he's in High School.
My 1st Ovation was my Dad's 68 DB so I've been an O snob for a while now, I figured I should start him out early.... |
