Joined: May 2006 Posts: 4238 Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | I had an Air Force, Vietnam-era atack fighter jock for a professor once. He told the story of how someone would call in for air support and send up white smoke to identify friendly positions and red smoke to identify enemy positions. He said, "As soon as the smoke started to show we would turn the red-smoking landscape into a black-smoking crater." Then he continued, "But we always hated supporting the Marines because the red smoke was ALWAYS mixed with the white smoke! We'd radio down asking where the #&*@ are we supposed to drop the ordinance? Their response was always; Just tell us when it's coming DAMMIT, so we can get out of the way!" "Marines are crazy!" he said shaking his head. BTW, considering he was a psychology professor, that last statement carried a lot of respect for a clinical analysis. Thanks Marines!

He later joined the National Guard, deployed to Iraq, and was attached to a Marine unit for a while. He can back with an alltogether different view of them. "Man, Marines are Crazy! We'd get motar and rocket attacks coming in and we're all looking for cover, these guys are pissed cause they can't get out of the gates fast enough to go mess up the people who have the audacity to shoot at them!"

Happy belated birthday, Marines! Heroism, valor, selfless courage -- the stuff of legend -- are commonplace for the Marines. Many, many, many more happy birthdays to the Marines! And, yes, sometimes we DO take them for granted.
