Location: Eaton, Indiana | I just bought a Adamas 597 with a VIP preamp. It will not function on the xlr output without the
regular guitar cord being plugged in. Is this
normal? And yes, I do have the phantom power turned on on the mixer.

Location: Scotland | the phantom will not power up the preamp without a slight mod to the XLR cable. You need to connect the ground (Pin 1) to the XLR casing. This is known as a ground-to-shell short. Should work just fine one you've done what is an annoying and unnecessary mod. The Optima didn't need this and subsequent preamps shouldn't have needed it either |

Scott, I've found a lot of XLR cables are already wired this way (ground to shell). If you have a continuity tester or ohmmeter it's easy enough to test it. On the female end (that plugs into the guitar) test between pin 1 and the casing. If there is no resistance, it should work. |
