Location: Erlinsbach | I bought three new Ovation guitars during the last 14 months - all equipped with the op-pro studio preamp. The compressor and exciter function is a big help in live situations and sounds excellent. Would like to have this function with my older guitars too, especially when playing with my 1581 Adamas (Optima Preamp).
Does anybody use an external preamp or fx unit with similar functions and results? Thanks for your help. |

Location: Capital District, NY, USA Minor Outlying Islands | You mean like a Boss Compressor or an MXR super comp? Results are they work. The MXR is a little more subtle, but all compressors are essentially a in the background sort of thing. I use them to make the sound more squishy, clicky or to add sustain.
As for a stand alone exciter, I found I don't really need them and currently don't own one. The ovations and adamas sound pretty good just as they are. Could be you need a new speaker? |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Never use what's on the guitar. Prefer the JangleBox pedal. I have the original. They now have two additional models, a JB2 that includes a separate treble boost feature, and an original style JBox finished in silver, produced overseas and offered for less than their basic USA-produced JBox. |

Location: Scotland | Check out the Aphex Punch Factory photo-optical compressor, and the Aphex Xciter. Both work well with acoustic instruments. |

Location: Capital District, NY, USA Minor Outlying Islands | If you really want an exciter, the Aphex, in my opinion is the best. I tried the BBE stuff and was not impressed. That's not to say BBE doesn't make some good stuff, it's just that their version of an exiter, I found, didn't work. The low process worked great, but the high end added excessive hiss with no beneficial addition to the sound. |

Location: Scotland | Put very simply, an exciter adds high order harmonics and phase shifts certain low frequencies. The result is improved clarity. |
