My fellow guitar freak friend received the best gift I have seen. His wife and kids gave him a card that said Guitar and in it was 1500.00 cash.Small bills.
Now he is a mess.
He likes O's.
What would you folks do?
Think about it.1500 clams to buy any O' in that range, new or used.
Could consume your life for awhile.

Just send it to Al. The rest will take care of itself.

I bet his family wouldn't be upset if he kicked in a bit more and bought the last of the LAV Koas or 2010 Collectors from Al.

I'd kick in a few extra hundred and buy one of the 1581 models from Al if they are still available. I would definitely buy something new and plan to keep it a lifetime.

The 1581 is by far my best sounding guitar. To my ear as well as everyone else's that's heard it.

Blows away the 2080

Yep. 1581. It is the best sounding guitar I have EVER owned.

There are a lot of options with that kind of $. Is he truly limited to that, or can he raid his secret stash (every man has to have a secret cash stash...) for a few hundred?

The 1581 that Al has is truly a great guitar. I played and listened to Alison's a few weeks ago. LOUD, clear, very articulate, balanced. I hacked away some blues chords and some lead lines and it sounded great. Alison played some beautiful fingerstyle that also sounded great.

I don't quite know why, but it is definitely louder than my 2080.

If he wants to stay within the $1500 range, I would look for a used excellent condition 1680, 2080, or U681T. Heck, I'd call Al and see if he has any blowout deals on a new 1680 or 2080 within that price range. The 1680 and U681T are wide nut, the 2080 is standard nut.

Another option would be one of Al's used W681 guitars, plus there is enough left over for a classic older Ovation, maybe an A-braced Balladeer. Or 3 nice used O's to create an instant mini-collection.

Not trying to start any controversies, but Al definitely has a new 2080 for $1,500 or better. (I got in trouble a while back for reporting that they were being offered for $2,500 on E-Bay...)

You could do a LOT worse than a new 2080 for $1,500!
