Happy New Year's Eve, folks!

Just a few days ago, I've taken delivery of DS768 #495852, a cherry red deep-bowl longneck.

Feel like calling this chapter in my musical life, "Almost Too Late but Perhaps Just in Time."

Oh Lord but this is a sonorous, wonderous, monstrous guitar! Huge sound. Been looking for this sound for a whole lot of years. Went through my Martin phase, then the early, early Larrivee, then the Old Warrior (D to D) then the '94 Collector's (D to D), then the Fender Jaguar Baritone Special HH - all good, and some unbelievebly good, some gone, some still with me - but now I've really got the sound I've been looking for.

Passed the time while it was in transit trying to make good use of Search - about strings, naturally. Can't tackle a baritone without, er, fretting about strings....

So I had several sets waiting by the time the beast arrived. Took off the slackened-for-shipment encrusted antiques whose only redeeming value was their presence on the Historic Strings Registry as having served in the Revolutionary War in Pennsylvania a couple of centuries too late.

I'm going to find the set I like for B to B.

The first set I've put on were the D'Addario XL157 that go .014, .018, .026, .044, .056. .068.
Wound from the 3rd string on. Big! That 0.68 juuuust made it through the saddle.

No question, this is a handful. Action's a little high, but intonation's spot on. Haven't looked to see if the factory shims are in place, but it feels like it. No buzzing, anyway, even when laying well into it, and the sound is just gigantic. Better stand back....

Also have a set of the D'Addariio EXP23 coated phospor bronze - but these go .016, 0.22, 0.29, 0.48, .060, .070, and I think they have to go back to juststrings - can't see going any heavier than what I've got on here now. Why do that to the top?

I've also got a set of the John Pearse 80/20 Bronze that go .015, .022, .030, .043, .054, .068. Haven't tried these yet, but seems as if they'll be a bit more of a handful than what I have on now.

Wondering if I can go any lighter while maintaining the welcome lack of slap n' slop. Any thoughts? I know: D to D in the original specs, but this one's going to stabilize at B to B, and move mountains doing it...

Anyway, just wanted to stop by to say Howdy Once Again to characters, worthy characters, I say! All o' ye! Some old timers when I first came around, some who are old timers now who showed up since my long ago last post. Hail and well met!

So, at Year's End, and New Year's Beginning, here's wishing for all of ye the Sounds of O you're hungering for, all the coming live-long year!

Hooray! And best wishes!
as ever,

Congrats! I had one just like that. Wish I never sold it. I did the b-to-b and it was thunderous. I actually settled on liking c-to-c best with strings that were 14-62 or somewhere around there. Matt Smith had some special strings made for his baritone that were like bridge cables ... he shared some with a few here and I could barely get them on. "I can still remember that rumbling sound".

P.S. Happy New Year, Michael. Nice to see you around.

Longnecks are great...

I DID NOT like the JP 80/20 on my Adamas longneck. Took them off after about 2 weeks.

The EXP23 are nice.
