Hey folks,

I'm looking to buy this purely acoustic 1974' Ovation - does it look like a Balladeer? What do you think this would be worth now? Thanks!

Uh... Shouldn't a 1974 Ovation have a Truss Rod Cover?

When did they start with the K-Bar neck? '79? '81?

Also a 1974 should have a silver foil label, does this have one?

Hey Old Man Arthur - this may not be the EXACT guitar, the lady who is selling told me that hers is "the same" as this one (The pictured guitar is one that belongs to a mutual friend (pictured)) - so... She gave me the serial and it dates to 74'... But no model no - so the pic is the best I can do...

So it MUST have a truss rod cover and silver foil label - I have been unable to see the actual guitar as yet...

Okay, I thought that was the guitar you were buying.

The only six-string models made in '74 were:
Balladeers, Classicals, Folklores, Artists, and Legends.
(Some of which were "Custom" and "Glen Campbell")
So that thins it down... If it ain't a slot-head, it is either a Balladeer, Legend, or an Artist.
If it is a Deep Bowl, it ain't an Artist.
So it is either a Balladeer or a Legend.
An old Balladeer has X bracing.
An old Legend has A bracing.
Customs have more fret markers.

I know that probably ain't too helpful.
What is it worth? As much as you are willing to pay.

In today's market they have been going pretty cheap, except for when I want to buy them.

Rule of thumb... if it has a foil label... buy it.
I can't see a truss rod cover.
And its a Balladeer. (round dots and the fretboard is not bound)
.
That pic has to be pretty old itself.
Notice the bottle of "Black Label" on the table.

Also, not ALL Legends from that era have the A bracing... my '74 1617 doesn't.

While I don't drink the stuff, Black Label is one of South Africa's most popular beers with the working class...

Thanks for the help folks :)

A '74 legend would have VT bracing. As would all non "Custom" Legends until the late 70s

Atma, you really need to post a pic of the guitar or at least the model number and serial number. That will tell us quite a bit about the guitar. Until then, we're all guessing as to what you have.

And as to value, take a look at ebay and you'll get an idea as to what they are trading for....

Just adding: Check the tuners. Unless they were changed, Chrome would be Balladeers, Gold would be Legends.
