Location: Yokohama, Japan | So Ive got this 2078 TX. The Black texture isnt bad, but I wonder if anyone has stripped one down to the wood before? In my mind it should be a great spruce top that will contrast sharply against everything else with is black or close to it.
Has anyone tried it? Also, is there some kind of binding that would be hurt/affected by just strip sanding? |

Location: Upper Left USA | I haven't stripped one down but I've changed colors on a few.
Less likely you'll find flaws as you'll find that the sides don't book match. |

Location: Utah | The texture is supposed to be one of the key ingredients to the tone of the T guitars. Some Adamas models also sport the texture. I'd leave it alone. |

Location: Yokohama, Japan | Im no luthier, and Im not quite ready to bust out the sander yet... But my thoughts are...
Wouldnt a finish like that REDUCE vibrations of the top? Making for a more muted tone? Removing the texture would allow the top to resonate more fully.. wouldnt it?
Or it might just ruin the guitar... theres always that possibility. Big reason why Im posing the question here in a group of Ovation users. Always the chance that I didnt think of this first and someone else already has a success or horror story to share ;) |

You buy a red car, decide you don't like the color so you break out the sander.
You'd be much better off selling the red car and putting that money toward what your really want. |

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | At least on the USA models, the textured top paint was/is lighter.
The textured paint is actually flimsier than it looks...
On my 2078T-? the previous owner discovered that you can dent that paint down to the wood with a guitar Pick.
Regular gloss-tops have colored paint, then the Famous Ovation bullet-proof clear layer.
The textured paint is all alone, and lighter.
After saying all that... I have No Idea what they use on the TX's.
Many of them don't even have Textured Tops, which kinda defeats the whole concept.
If you want a wood colored Elite, you might wanna just buy a -4 Natural top 2778LX of AX...Or a 6778 or a 1778...
But coming from the man with the paint brush... Do What You Feel! :D |
