As you may have noticed, I recently posted a query to the Ovation Forum on Capos. I really appreciate all the responses and the Forum. Can I ask for assistance valuing my Ovation for sale? I have tried but just can't get used to the round back having come from the world of my solid body (1969) Hagstrom II.

The pictures are on http://www.fotki.com/markl

Model is 3862
s/n 448507

Thank you

It seems a Pinnacle super shallow bowl made in Japan .... can be solid spruce top (3862) but look like torch top

Every year Ovation donates a guitar (this was one of them) to the Torrington, CT PROBUS Club's annual charity auction. I bought it about 6 or 7 years ago but have no other history on it. I would have thought it was made here in New Hartford. I was told by one of my patients who worked at Ovation that the finish was "too fancy" for the quality control people and that it was never marketed. What the top is made of, I have no idea except that the finish is gorgeous. Looks like it was deep lacquered (for lack of a better term). I wish I could get the pix to do it justice.

Pinnacles were very nice offshore guitars. Made for a couple of years only in the very early 90's. I tend to think of them like MIJ Strats ... real high build quality and rivaling (or exceeding) similar level instruments from the US factories. But alas, it still says Ovation on the headstock so they don't fetch the $$ they rightfully deserve.

You ought to do some research on recent eBay sales to get a flavor for what the market is doing, but if it were me, I'd set my expectations around something in the three to four hundred dollar range with the case.

I had a Japanese Pinnacle from the earlier (mid-80's) release. Supposedly an offshore Balladeer, it had a brown bowl and was very well finished. Lacked the tonal quality of the US guitar though.

Expect value to be 60-65% of equivalent Balladeer.

I agree with bobbo's assessment.
