It's too bad the prizes could not be based, at least in part, on the musical quality of the entry.
Just counting "hits" & "likes" allows Ovation to quantify the results with real numbers without having to get into the foggy area of personal opinions.
But it is what it is.
.
As far as the use of the term "hero", I think they're hoping to tie into the "Guitar Hero" mindset.

It's just a play on popular American "culture" (and I use that word very sarcastically). You get on American Idol or Dancing With the Stars and you try to get the public to vote for you so you win a prize. I only watched DWS for possible wardrobe malfunctions, but the thought of that happening with Kirsti Alley caused violent wretching, so I couldn't watch last season. I don't usually participate, watch or vote for any of these things, but I did think JJ's instructional video was one of the best that I watched.

I think it is set it up as you suggest. From the official rules:
"At the end of the Contest Period the third party judges designated by Sponsor will select one winner of the Hometown Hero of the Year award. The Entrant will be judged based on application, entrance materials, talent and page sharing and Facebook likes."
So the "voting" by the public plays only a small part in determining the winner, it probably just gets their foot in the door, more like a nomination than a vote…

I suspect that's exactly where the contest name came from. They should have considered that dropping "guitar" left them with a phrase that has a completely different meaning that is inappropriate for a guitar contest.

But, as you said, it is what it is…

Ya didn't vote for ME. I never participated in that contest.
And I stand corrected. (ooops  )
I know that I voted for someone else, and the I cannot find the contest videos.
Too bad too, cuz there were some good lessons in there.

My submission has finally posted, won't post it here, but I will tell you it goes in a completely different way than any one else's.

Also, if by some slim chance in Hades I do win, I won't be keeping the guitar.....Some Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Or Marine will get it!

Alright Dark Bar,

Like I said, it's not what you'd expect, but it will shed more light on my earlier comment about the Hometown Hero title.

Cool video, but doesn't show too much in the way of Ovations....might be tough to win. Good job you've done.

Two of those guitars were memorial guitars, sent in memory of fallen soldiers, one of the guitars....the red one, did two tours of duty in Afghanistan, and was brought back by an Army unit, sent to be professionally set up again, and presented to the fallen soldier's mother....An Army Chaplain personally brought it from Washington state to Michigan to present the guitar to her, and tell her how much it meant to the troops.

I know to most of you this sounds like blasphemy, but a $3,000.00 hunk of wood, would mean a lot more in the hands of a soldier than in mine.

To honest it wish I knew exactly because nothing took off the way that way.
I think people want to see guitar the guitar is. 1777-USA is not common sight.
I put a link signature line in on emails, and I on 20 yahoo discussion groups. Put a post on forums
a dozen or so forums. I 6000 people on myspace.
Plus its humourous song that people seem to like.

There was no compter program used. You have not been able to do that in long time.
Youtube takes the video down then suspends your account if you try that. If you get over 100,000 views you get revenue off the video. Plus even if knew how to run up a counter if I break 100K views Ovation would get the check not me.
I have no motivation to do that.
Its just a good song people passed the around.

I can't remember what guitar I used for the electric portions of the video, the acoustic stuff was actually done on one of the guitars before it went to Iraq. It was the old Harmony Mahogany acoustic that is near the end of the acoustic portion....I cheated tho, I tuned to open E minor and so I could strum and solo at the same time.
