Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Other than being able to blend the wet/dry mix if the amp is so equipped with a control (some might have this feature, most don’t), does anybody have a good reason to use an amp’s FX loop for pedals rather that just string them at the front of the signal chain before the amp? No matter how I look at it, I can’t find a good reason. |

Location: Rochester, NY | If your amp has a distortion channel, you definitely do not want to run time based effects like delay prior to the input stage; it will sound all messed up with the distortion engaged.
Not to go off tangent, but this is the biggest fault of the Orange Tiny Terror. Its sound fantastic but boy do I wish it had a FX loop. |

Location: NW Washington State | The high impedance, high gain input on most electric amps will emphasize any noise from your pedals.
With separate pedals, I like
guitar > compressor > distortion > amp
then
fx loop out/send > chorus > delay > fx loop in/return
But it depends on the pedal. Something like an auto-wah might be best right after the guitar. Some pedals might not match up with or could be overdriven by the effects loop. You have to experiment.
If you have an all-in-one pedal, try it both ways and use what sounds best and is easy to use.

Location: Jet City | I have some pedals that have horrible noise issues in front of the amp but in the loop they're just fine. I'm not a sound engineer so I can't tell you why, it just is what it is. Delays are a usual suspect. |

Location: Connersville, Indiana | I have the same problem with delay and flange Damon. Like Steve said about the all in one pedals. I use a Line 6 floor pod plus, and depending on which effect is used, even on that sometimes it sounds better running in the effects loop and sometimes it doesn't when on the two distorted channels. Don't have the problem or seem to on the clean channel. That's on a 100 watt Crate GFX 2-12. |
