I've only had the chance recently to use my 1778 LX output for recording, and notice - it's distorted. Rechecked through PA - same problem.

Neither my Celebrity Classic nor a Balladeer 12-string (sorry, don't have model #'s handy ATM) have this problem - both are crystal clear.

Changed battery in the preamp (OP-Pro) twice.

Connections seem to be OK. It's not static, it's just distorted. Changing levels doesn't seem to help, and nothing is going into red on either recording interface or PA.

One thought I had is to swap the preamp module from the Celebrity to the Elite and see whether it works. While the connector appears similar, though, the pinout looks slightly different - the Elite has eight pins, the Celebrity Classic has six. Is this safe to try, or should I take another route in troubleshooting?

Thanks in advance.

Dave

NO!

They are different for a reason.
It might not destroy the preamp, the then again it might.
It could also bend the contacts.

I don't have an answer to your distortion question.

I would check the following:

1) String Tension across the bridge. Are you using super light strings and tuning down or anything? Or perhaps the opposite and putting a lot of pressure across the pickup?

2) Is there anything on the battery lugs, like corrosion, etc?

3) Check the Preamp's connections. Make sure they are secure.

4) Check and make sure that the output is also connected properly. no loose connections, etc.

5) Check with a different cable.

My first guess would be the battery, but you've already covered that. The next suggestion is to take the preamp down to your local Ovation store, pop it in another Ovation, plug it in and see what happens.

Well, Zarkon may actually live near a shop that stocks Ovations. I can see a non-Celebrity Ovation (sometimes even a USA made one) 20 minutes walk from my office.

Unfortunately, I don't think he's a 20 minute walk from Richard's house...

I don't have an answer to your distortion question.
Appreciate your attempt to protect me from myself. :) However, the physical configuration of the connector is similar, and the cans are essentially identical. It's just that the OP-Pro has contacts in all eight of the connector slots, while the other has two missing. I'll shoot some photos when I have some time and post them.

My thinking was that if the two missing pins have to do with functions not available on the lesser preamp, then it's probable that one can plug into the other. (e.g. they are extra lines for the XLR function supported on the OP-PRO)

If I had schematics, I could probably figure out where to hang a scope probe and take a more in-depth look at the problem.

Thanks,

Dave

D'Addario EJ16, standard tuning.

2) Is there anything on the battery lugs, like corrosion, etc?

No.

3) Check the Preamp's connections. Make sure they are secure.

All looks good; checked the pickup connections themselves when I restrung this weekend; had back off last week and checked connections internally.

4) Check and make sure that the output is also connected properly. no loose connections, etc.

All good.

5) Check with a different cable.

Done, no difference.

Yes, he is. :D The local GCs all have only Celebrity models now. However, it's possible that the local band/orchestra dealer, who also stocks Ovation, might have a high-end model. I'll have to check.

Okay, you are a bit too far from me here!
I have them all to check out your issue.
Do you have a friend, who has an Ovation too to change the preamps for testing?
