I never heard the sound of a Breadwinner, or a Deacon, a short Ovation elettrica.Anyone has any clips that I hear?

I have a Deacon 12, and I can tell you that I can get quite a range of sounds out of it. I'm not sure how much different a 12 is than a 6 in terms of sound, but the pickups and active electronics are the same. The amp and how you are driving it makes a lot of difference too. So it depends on what sound you are trying for, and then dialing in the variables to get there.

Maybe there's some examples on youtube, but I don't know any offhand. I would try to record some sounds with what I have, but my room right now is set up for practicing not recording, so it may take a few days to get to it.

In the meantime, I found a couple of tunes I did with the Deacon. On this one ( Lose You Yet ), the Deacon is the second electric that plays the lead bit in the second break and then again through the outro (the other electric is a Viper). On this other tune ( Very Well ), I'm playing a CL12 and the Deacon. On both songs, I was looking for a cleaner, jangly sound ... but the Deacon can get down and dirty, I just don't have anything recorded I can find right now.

Only because that's the sound I was kinda going for! Like I said, you can dial in a lot of sounds.

All of the Ovation electrics have their own unique sound palettes so don't let these examples stand as the "ovation electric" sounds. There's a WHOLE lot more out there. Here are two songs from the OFC CDs that I use my Viper for the electric guitars on: Carmelo and California Lady .

I think this is the point that's missed most often. Many people purchase Fender or Gibson because of those instruments sound, or sound they associate. The Ovations let you "choose" your own sound.

The Viper which is what I have the most experience with can sound like certain positions that I happen to like on a tele or strat, and I think it is a richer sounding version of those tones. The neck feel is somewhere between a Strat and an LP.

This is all what makes id'ing the Ovation Electric sound difficult and may have even had something to do with them not catching on as much as they should have. You couldn't just say... "if you want a tele, only better than this is it" cause you'd only be telling a fraction of the story.

I tend to agree with everything Miles said above, (and he should know, he's owned/played enough of them)…

In my opinion:

From the ones that I've played, (UKII, Viper, Preacher) the UKII in particular seems to have a very wide palette of sounds, and does them all exceptionally well.

The Viper isn't quite as versatile, but those hot pickups are really special, just superb tone, (and distinctive from the UKII), it can do a spot-on Telecaster quack, but IMO, it is much more versatile than any Telecaster. (Hmm, I wonder how a Viper would sound with a Urelite body, like a UKII… ;) )

The Preacher offers a nice, but not terribly distinctive, humbucker tone, I played my Preacher a lot more before I got a UKII, the UKII can cover the Preacher tones with nicer "color" and also do a lot more.

I haven't (yet) played a Preacher Deluxe, nor either of the two guitars you specifically asked about (Breadwinner or Deacon,) so I can't comment on those, but, for what it's worth, try these videos;

HERE\'S an example of the sound of a Breadwinner…

Breadwinner Limited

Deacon (in Italian!)

Another Deacon

Yet Another Deacon

As for the jangly Rickenbacker tone; Bobbo nailed that sound with his excellent "Very Well" above. That's about the best "Ric sound" I've heard without using an actual Rickenbacker. There are a lot of reasons for the distinctive Ric sound, including the Ric's reversed string pairings, the notoriously quirky Ric intonation, the body, pickups, etc.… they are very nice guitars if you need "that" sound frequently, but they're not cheap…

All of the above is just my personal, unprofessional, opinion, which is probably not worth much…

(…and all of this has me thinking I need to move a Deacon 12 to the top of my wish list…) ;)

PS: Bobbo, I think I've said it before, but your version of "Lose You Yet" is excellent!

I've had em all, and the UKII still reigns supreme for what I do.

Second fav is my Viper followed by the VXT (not really a solidbody).

I didn't bond with the tones from the Deacon.

The only one I haven't had the pleasure of putting through the paces is a Preacher Deluxe.

...after all this, my personal conclusion (not professional): this guitar, perhaps too particular, has not had great success because, unlike the Stratocaster, she has not met his Jimj Hendrix .... P.S. yes,"Lose You Yet" is very good
