Location: Sydney, Australia | There was a man who changed our world - made computers usable by normal people (remember when word processing required you to memorise about 50 keystroke combinations to do such simple things as bold and italic, and gave you no feedback about what you had changed - just wait til it comes out of the printer), introduced smart phones to the normal punter and even made a splash in the movie business and revolutionised the way we listen to (and buy) music. I only hope he's mentored enough people at Apple that they can continue to create great products. |

My wifes' families building supply had the first computer in town. Eight feet long, about four feet high and wide. It processed inhouse account cards only. |

That prompted me to dig out this photo , circa 1984. Our two PDPs are the large, mostly black racks in the background. 16-track reel-to-reel digital tape drives on the left. The short, washing-machine size cabinets, rear, center, are removable disk drives with a whopping 64MB capacity each. The printers in front of the desk are actually electrostatic plotters. Yeah, that's me using an LA-120 hard copy terminal. Was I ever so young? |

Location: Sydney, Australia | I wrote a program in 1979 that crashed the DEC-10 at my uni, causing all the other students with their stacks of punched cards to wait in line for 20 minutes while the computer was re-booted. I then re-inserted my cards which crashed it again (upon which I made a sly retreat).
Turns out, I missed a set of brackets (), which made all the difference. Who woulda thunk it? |
