Hello everyone. I purchased a 1981 1658 CL. Really nice 12 string. I bought it about a year ago. The owner said it sat in his closet in the case. I try not to play it too often. The guitar looks excellent. I just have a question about the frets. I can see some ware. I just want to know how long they last or what should I be looking for in the future if I need to get new frets? Thanks!

You can have the frets dressed by a repairman if they are not too badly worn down. If I had the guitar here I could do that for you.

Its call a fret level and crown. It should cost around $100 (give or take $20), and if done properly shouldn't be noticable. It's well worth it. It can take a buzzing, fussy guitar and make it a wonder to play.

And play that Legend more often. It's sweet. To play them is to love them.

Now that you've noticed the fret wear, you won't be happy till it's fixed... You may as well spend the hundred bucks and have the satisfaction. I'm going to do the same thing on my bass that I am refinishing.

Wasn't there some sort of fret work service called... "plecked"?
Or was that just a fad that has gone by the way-side?

Plek is extremely expensive and I think generally when they do it they replace the frets entirely. Mike Lull up here in Bellevue quoted me $650 for a Plek on my since departed Tornado...

I loved my Tornado but would have rather spent the money sending it to JB.

My custom Tak 760 came with plecked frets. Darned if I can tell the difference.

Thanks a lot for answering my question. I'm taking it to a specialist on Saturday to get it looked at. Thanks again.
