i wonder what the concenses would be on the the bee-gees band ? i kind of liked their music and still do but it was a disco era and for me I did not like it but i went through it and did my part to get through it clothes and all.
i still think that the bee gees changed the music scene almost as much as the best bands of the century did .
what do you think?

I liked their stuff from before and after (but not during) their disco era. Still Waters is a good album. Their One Night Only DVD is worth having and probably the best music DVD I have.

disco, while a significant part of their history, was such a small part of their career as far as I'm concerned.

Favorite BEEGEES tune = Lonely Days.

Ther Brothers Gibb are always going to be one of those bands people love to hate. Forget the fact they had one of the best selling albums of all time, Forget the fact they wrote most of their own stuff and wrote for others. Were they great musicians, maybe not, but people vote with their wallet and the Brothers "jive talked" all the way to the bank. Oh and I liked them.

I am not sure how Barry can be dismissed. Vocally, he had nice range that worked for his songs. He could write and what he wrote was popular at the time. As far as time...probably one of the few groups to make it through a couple of decades successfully. Barry knew his way around the fretboard, although I think he played open d cause he was lazy. I never understood why Barry had better hair. I bet it was a bitch to comb out in the mornings.

Here is a good guitar tutorial by Barry

btw...I have never been able to go through all his videos...but some of them are pretty funny.

They were okay pre-disco, had a few well-written songs ("Massachusetts" come to mind). Once they went disco, however, I lost all respect for them. Bob's analogy of Badfinger/Osmonds is a good one.

So? Didn't that movie "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" kill their careers?

Along with Peter Frampton's?

Good writers, singers, and performers.

Unfortunately the woman who WOULD have been my ex (if I was just a little dumber...good story) thought they were better than the Beatles, so I don't much care for them.

As for disco; I quit playing for a living a couple months before KC & the Sunshine Band had their first hit (75-ish here) so I got out just in time. Everyone I knew was out of work when the bars we played put in mirror balls and disco sound systems. But I had a really good time in the year or two before I met my wife. (and then it got better - of course...... )

The Bee Gees are incorrectly "blamed" for disco in my opinion. Their songs that ended up on the SNF Soundtrack album were originally just going to be on the next Bee Gees album. It was just the direction their music was headed after they did Jive Talkin'.

Stigwood just kept asking them for more songs for his movie and they kept giving him another song originally slated for their next album. Then the movie and soundtrack just exploded.

But it seems a lot of people think SNF and the whole disco phenomenon was orchestrated by the Bee Gees when in fact they were just as surprised as anyone else.

Personally I think How Deep Is Your Love is a beautiful song.

Personally I really like them. Their early 60's stuff was very very good. I enjoy the disco era hits as well. Their final 2 albums were (IMHO) very good and cements just how much talent there was in that group. Of course - I must reveal - I really really enjoy most of the 60 groups. Read a rumor not too long ago that Barry & Robin were going to do a new Bee Gees album. Time will tell.
