It also worked for my Godin and solid body electrics. Search the archives. There was a thread about them. Wish they still made them. By the time I became aware of them, I was only able to enjoy the Super Shallow one. How far are you from AL? If you are close enough, it would definitely be worth grabbing one.

I believe the next step down is the GSX5 with a black waterproof polyester material. I think I'd like the black better because I'd imagine the tan suedette would get dirty fast, and since the GSX5 was used in the Tribal Planet videos, I assume they're still very durable. How well did your tan case wear? This is all based on the very limited information I could find when searching the Internet. If anyone else knows the differences between the two, I'd love to know. P.S. Noah, one of the guitars that would be traveling in the case is your old 1869 which I now own and love. I also recently acquired an 1867, which is about the same age, in excellent+ condition (like the 1869), and in a natural finish. The 1869 I keep in New Standard Tuning and the 1867 I keep in Old Standard Tuning.

I couldn't tell you the difference between the GSX7 and GSX5 cases. I just knew that the tan case was TP's latest-and-greatest. If I originally had the choice of equivalent cases in black-poly or tan-suede'd, I still would have picked the tan. I thought it looked nice and it didn't show any wear. I never thought it was getting dirty. It was a case to protect and transport my guitar. It did it well and kept looking good. I never got car grease on it, so I can't tell you how it cleans up. Color and fabric-finish are personal choices. How rough do you plan on handling it where you feel black will be beneficial? Have you considered just staying with the super-shallow OHSC. The hard shell is just as water waterproof as any poly material and the aluminum case valance probably protects from water entry just as good as a zipper. If Al has the two cases we are talking about, go look, compare, and report back on which one you picked.

From what I understand, you sold the 1869 to Randy who then sold/traded it to Dave's Guitars who then sold it to me. At least that's what I've pieced together from these threads: http://ovationfanclub.com/megabbs/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=26577&... http://ovationfanclub.com/megabbs/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=19225&...

What interested me in the Tribal Planet cases is I want something smaller than the standard case. I believe the standard OHSC's exterior is molded to fit all Ovations and then different inserts are used depending on the bowl size, so the case is unnecessarily big for a Super Shallow Guitar. I've also come across the SKB 1SKB-16 which seems to be much narrower than the standard OHSC and also from my experience with SKB cases, more durable.

I've also used it a couple of times for my Thunderbolt, which is the only SSB I have. While it "fits", it's tight and takes a bit of snugging initially to get it closed up. Once in, fits like a glove, quite literally. I wouldn't substitute it for a hard case when the extra protection is truly oneeded, but when I know I can keep it near me or out of the way, then I use it. The great thing about this bag is that is so versatile, and the extra compartments on the outside that hold everything I need to take with me. I didn't think much for the backpack straps until I actually used them for the first time. Now I'm a believer. I am really happy I bought this bag from Al. It looks great, it's top quality construction, and made for doing the job well. The bigger acoustic one is also a great bag but I don't use it for my Ovations. I just took some iPhone pics of the guitar in the bag. PM me with an email address if you want them. Even better, send me a smartphone number and I can blast them over to you faster and way more easy.

Joined: December 2004 Posts: 1673 Location: SoCal | Mark - Yep, sorry, that was my newer 1869 (OP-preamp, plain bridge, etc). She shipped back to Mother in her OHSC. I let her go during one of my "only natural top" moments. I later happened across an older natural topped one with a carved bridge and had to have her. It looks like they redid the top of your 1869-CCB along with the carved bridge. Hard case, hybrid case, gigbag... I can just give you my experience with what I've used. It boils do to how much protection you anticipate needing. I used to always use the best hard case I could, but then realized the convenience of a hybrid case if I was traveling in our little convertible instead of our minivan. There wasn't any wasted space in the tan TP case with the 1869. It worked well, always looked good, and it served double duty for the solid bodies. Hopefully others will chime in with their experiences.

I'm glad he can show you what the SSB will look like in the tan TP case. Keep us informed on what you finally go with. If you can personally pickup a tan TP case and save on shipping, I still think it's the way to go from the utility aspect. Those cases have a lot going for them. Sorry they are no longer made.

Yeah, in the case there was the receipt for the work done on the bridge and CCB refinish. I'm curious, why would the top have been refinished? It already looked to be CCB in the picture you previously posted. Was there damage to the finish? It's a great guitar regardless of having the top refinished, but I'm curious to know the history. Thanks, Mark

Maybe someone else can tell us what Mother's usual process is to replace a bridge. Only a dad would know... certain characteristics in the wood appear more pronounced in the photo you posted. That's what hinted to me about a redo. I bet if the paper work wasn't in the case, you would have just thought the bridge was swapped.

Joined: April 2011 Posts: 97 Location: Marlton, NJ | I ended up getting the SKB case and it arrived today. It does seem to be superior to the TKL OHSC. It's smaller, it seems more durable, and the latches are much better. The only downside is there isn't as much room in the accessories compartment. Long term, it seemed like a better option than the Tribal Planet since I'll probably be needing a case to fly with in the future, but yet it's still relatively small.
