This might get a little to Zen-like but a couple months ago a respected friend and a good player passed on a thought that has stuck with me like an ear worm.

Your left hand is what you know... you're right hand is who you are.

Whether you apply that statement to your favorite professional or practice buddy you start to see the truth in it.

I think there is so much attention paid to scales, pull-offs, and hammer-ons that the right hand is often not concidered a factor.

Ever hear someone playing some simple cowboy chords and wonder just where all that sound is coming from?

I agree with the right hand thing. But that's probably why I chose finger picking as my "style"...to me it's more interesting to hear. I like to choose what note is gonna follow the one before it, rather than a strum which blends all the notes.

I also agree with the right hand thing...but in my case I am left handed, but had to learn to play guitar, and bass right handed. (Couldn't afford a left handed instrument when was 13) Surprisingly in my case my left hand is much faster and more dexterous than my right. I often wonder though...how much of better player would I have been if I would of learned left handed? Anyone else?

Also sorry to hear of your loss of a good friend.

It was a bit Zen like -- thinking vs. feeling/experiencing. Noetic vs. emotive. But good thought/framework to ponder!

Better watch out by the grassy knolls, bobbo.

...and, well, the Bells Outlets too.

rhythm is where it is at. so many players can't do it well.
right hand technique does define you.
a local musician often mentions that I am a very "expressive" player. I think she means that that the rhythm fits the tune and that you can make it so much more interesting by variation.

others will say that I play out of time LOL

Al, I think the way you play fits the song very well.

But I think she was referring to the guitar face you make while you play.

It's easy to watch someone's left hand and think that's where its all coming from. My wife plays Cello and String players know that almost ALL of the sound is produced by the right hand (I don't know any lefty cellist or violinist).

Michael Hedges was a lefty who played guitar right handed style. He certainly did some amazing stuff with his right hand though he also used his left to make sound.

+1 on everything. Most of my playing "consciousness" is in the right hand as it "tells" the left what to do. In a way, hopping around the fretboard is easy. The heavy lifting is in the picking/strumming hand!

Actually, it's the "regrets" of your death.........

When playing with a band, rhythm is everything, whether picking or strumming. I've got an in-ear moniter with the band at church. I keep the drums turned up loud. Gotta play with the drummer regardless of strumming or picking. Hell, even if I play the drum pattern, I can't go wrong......

I played golf with a fellow once who said something funny, but true. He said, "You meet a whole different group of people in the middle of the fairway."
Sort of the same with guitar players. The guys with great right hand technique are a much different class than those without...

I'd encourage any Lefties contemplating learning guitar to learn Right handed.
It ain't natural to play and you need to learn anyway so go with the flow.
