OK Ovation historians, can you tell me if this could possibly be the original case? The guitar is a '70 1117-4 called a Deluxe Balladeer, but it's really a first year Legend.

Could this be the case it came in?

Can't answer the question about the case Damon but I would think it is.
I know they are younger by 10 yrs but it looks very much the same style as a GS/GP case.

That sure looks like a nice git.

You guys have all the fun over there.

So many guitars so little time (and money maybe)

HOW old is that guitar? Can't tell you about the case, but the instrument looks great.

AJ, I've had the guitar for a bit, but I was taking a bunch of pics today and I thought I'd take some of that case.

FA, it's a 1970 1117-4. I think I have the oldest one amongst our group here, though the bridge was replaced (rather shortly after). It should have a winged bridge. Bobbo has one that's true to specs with the correct bridge, but this one is a touch earlier.

It's in excellent condition. It has a couple of finish cracks, but no real blemishes other than that.

Plays like a dream, and it's a cannon when it comes to projection.

That is the most non-original case I have every seen.

Are you sure, Slip? There were no moulded cases in '70 so I'm thinking it could be original. I don't think I've ever seen that colour interior, is all.

Bob Frith would know.

Sorry Brad but you're wrong on this! It's a Lifton case that Ovation used in the mid 60's for several years: I have one just like it for my 1969 1115-1. It's very possible that this is the original case for this guitar...only the original owner would know.

We did a lengthy thread on this subject last fall...if someone cares to chase it down...great. Tuppy and myself were trying to determine the differences between a Lifton or a Victoria case. Tuppy correctely ID'd my case as a Lifton: Damon's is the spittin image of mine:

Thanks guys. I thought it might be original, but wasn't sure. Too bad she doesn't have the original winged bridge tho.

Oh well. I bought it to play, and it gets played a bunch.

Lifton and Victoria were two of the main luggage and guitar case makers in the late 60's. For the first 3 or so years Ovation's came in these cases, with either blue orange or yellow lining.

I'm afraid it's gone. Most likely the painters who where in our house last month lifted it. But why THAT one? I'm gonna buy a Taylor and sit it right out in the open so any time somebody wants to steal a guitar they'll take that one instead.

Effen bastards. File a police report and see if the police will check pawnshops for you. Pawnshops have to keep records and if the police are willing to spend a few minutes searching their computer it might show up. A friend of ours had most of her professional music equipment stolen (but fortunately not her prized $100k violin). Some of it showed up at a pawnshop. The police were zero help to her, but you may have better luck.

Do the rounds of the pawn shops yourself. Take a "wanted" poster that they can keep under the counter with a photo and identifying information (such as serial number or particular scratches). I worked with criminals for many years and most are quite stupid and will not take the kind of precautions to avoid detection that you imagine they would. We had a thief step over my open guitar case with my legend in it to steal a second hand car stereo which my flat mate paid $40 for.

Offer a tempting reward.

Dave,
A carefully-worded warning in the local newspaper will put that painting company out of business permanently. Also, they may have already indentified the thief and fired him anyway. Free speech is a wonderful thing. Use it to your advantage.

A friend of mine got his Fender Clapton Blackie stolen from his car while he was working out at the gym (first tme he ever left a guitar in his car!).

He called the GC where he had bought it to report the theft. Two hours later GC called him back and said they had the guitar, the guy who stole it (and subsequently tried to sell it to them) and a police officer waiting for him to come over to identify it.

Being a theif does not require brains...

I can see the police officer now, as Dave explains that he's not sure he didn't sell it or loan it out because he has so many guitars that he can't keep track of them all.
I had a good watch stolen once, but I took so long looking for it in all the places I could have left it that I never got around to filling out the police report.

..Or he could explain that he was a serious player/collector and has comprehensive records of his entire inventory.. Always speak wisely with law enforecment, never give them an excuse to doubt your word in favor of the rights of the thief who stole your guitar..
