There should be information on the Ovation website.

The short answer is that the Elite is a much higher grade guitar with a better neck, better wood in the top AND a gloss finish instead of satin, better components, etc.

From top down, the grade is:
Custom Elite
Elite
Elite Standard (discontinued, I think)
Elite T
Elite Special

The Elite Special is still a nice guitar and a good value for the right price.

The Elite Special or Elite standard as itwas called some time past exhibits some cost saving options over the Elite. the most important one being a slightly lower grade of wood for the top. I believe the lesser grade is only lower due to the visual aspects and not in sound. If you order an -5 or Black of a certian model you will probably get a top that would not be as visually striking.

Other options that are more visual are the use of Rosewood for the bridge and chrome vs. gold plated tuners.

Gloss coatings take longer to produce and the argument over whether satin or gloss necks are better still goes on.

If you are putting up the money I think it's worth it to opt up when you can. there may be little or no sound difference.

There will be a difference in Resale later.

just thought I would add my two cents....I own both an elite and an elite standard....the elite is from 1989 and the standard was bought new in 1999. I like them both even though they are somewhat different....the standard has a two piece neck with a soft V shape to it...the elite has a five piece neck with a more rounded feel...the elite has wooden inlays in the fingerboard..the standard has none....they both play and sound great although the elite has a more sophisticated pre-amp than the older op 24...hope this helps you out....keep on pickin...

...that rounded 5-piece neck has pretty much spoiled me, they don't get much better than that...

I have not found a guitar yet with a 'better' (subjective, I know) neck than the five-piece on my Elite. Well, the Hamer T51 I played today (see my OT: Hamer questions thread) has a multi-piece neck (unfortnately it's finished...I hate that on a neck) that had the right shape...not quite the same feel, though.
