| I was told I should start a new thread for this guitar as I was half-hearted in the old one.
Will send pics of any view of this first in '84 #302670 in great shape.

| even if your guitar is in MINT condition, you probably cannot sell it for $1200.
your best bet is to put it on ebay & list the blemishes honestly:
(1) 5 cracks behind the bridge
(2) bridge repaired by local shop
(3) 1 long crack (8-10") between the end of the fretboard & the bridge
(4) some dings & pick marks
set a $1200 reserve. you could tell how much people are willing to pay at the end of the auction.
you said in the OT that your Taylor 614 was better than 1537. how much better? by the way, your 1537 is not the only black one existed. i've seen several. like dave said, nutmeg color is the best.

Thanks for the info. BTW, I never said the Taylor was better than the 1537. It's just occupying all of my time.
Also, I have always represented this guitar honestly i.e. finish cracks, bridge repair etc. I've even offered to take new photos of any portion of this guitar.
Yes, you're right that this isn't the only black 1537, as I recently saw one on a 1984 press release from ovation. And I might agree with you about the nutmeg, it's a real beauty.
I based my price on an average of what OFC people e-mailed me, nothing more. If It's too high, I won't be offended by a lower offer if anyone is so inclined. And if no one here wants it, then I will move on to sell it elsewhere. I was just extending a courtesy to this forum and to what I've found to be some of the nicest and most helpful folks on the web.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Tough to say exact value without seeing the guitar. Buyer determines value, not seller. I slightly disagree with my frind Mr.Adamas. I absolutely think a mint condition 1537 will fetch at least $1200. If I lost mine I would definately pay that to replace it. Different buyers will value it based on different merits. To me it's a great sounding guitar (not THE best), that represents a turning point in Ovations evolution. They are pretty rare (black, sunburst and nutmeg especially). Some predict that in 20 years time the 1537 will be "the" sought-after guitar just like the slothead is today. A 40 year old nutmeg 1537 could easily be worth $3000.
As for your guitar, I would do the following. This is just ME, and sometimes I think differently than most. Anyway, the lacquer cracks and bridge situation are a huge turn off. Probably puts the value in the $500 range. Black is easily refinished. I would send it to the factory and get the top refinished still in gloss black and the bridge attached correctly. It'll cost you a bit to get done, but I bet in the end you'll sell the guitar for $1500. |

Anything that has to do with repairs, refurbishment, fixes, tweaks, oww-ies, or dings, immensely affects resale value to most potential consumers. Send up a "trial balloon" with a Fleabay offering, with requisite reserve amount, and see who takes a shot at it.

| I currently own a 1758 12 string and would love a 1537 6 string to complement it.
I would be interested in this or another 1537 in any finish as long as in good condition,
and would be willing to pay in the 5-600 dollar range for one.

| Thanks for all the input. I'm inclined to agree with Standingovation that the best course might be to let Ovation have this guitar for awhile. I'll be honest here, when I had a luthier at a very well respected, only upper end guitar store in my area repair the bridge, I thought that he would perform the work with mucho integrity. When I picked it up and saw that he had added two new screws and covers, I went off the deep end.
His reply was that it was just an Ovation, and he didn't think he needed to go to that much trouble. Being a wood worker myself, I felt like strangling the guy, because I could have done a better job without luthier training than he did.
Live and learn. In my mind, the 1537 is such a perfect combination of form and function, style and acoustics, that it probably will live on in history like Standingovation said. We'll see. My '53 D-18's proven that it can happen.
