My daughter sent out this MySpace bulletin today:

Date: Jun 11, 2008 9:58 AM
Subject: i find it funny
Body: that i go into my living room to grab my guitar, and i have to open four cases in order to discover which is mine.

we have WAYYY too many ovations in my home right now.

i think the final count was six, plus an ibanez being stored in an ovation case.

the verdict-KATIE COME GET YOUR GUITAR!
For the record, I only own one Ovation. She owns three.

I have little tags on mine... Tell her to put stickers or something on the cases,
then Try to put the correct guitar in the correct case!

[I sometimes have that problem, even with the tags]

I bought an el cheapo Brothers label maker just for this reason. I make a small label for the case handle area and a large one for the body end of the case.

Good Idea, mine are just white paper tags taped on the ends.

But since she only has three, I was thinking more along the line of Peace signs, Deadhead stickers, Motorhead, Steppenwolf, Iron Butterfly, whatever she is into...

[probably none of them, huh? :p ]

My wife is a RN: she gets lots of that cloth white surgical/nursing tape...it works great and I put a 3 inch piece w/ model # on each case lid on the outside edge just in back of the first clasp...works great and looks cool IMHO.

Hang tags work great. The yellowish card stock with an eyelet and string on one end. Cheap, disposable, sturdy etc... And the best part is the case doesn't have to be in a particular position to read it. You just have to be able to get to the handle where it's tied on and grab the card to see it.

I use stickers.
"Life Is Good" on my Ute case.
"Two Man Group" on my AD-II.
"Made in Detroit" on the KoaT.

I'm thinking the OFC store might even have some.

I can tell the Viper and Deacon cases apart. The case Miles sent with the Viper has some vintage (old) stickers still on it.

I make a small label for the case
This method also works well for knowing which shoe goes where... tho some here may have to put matching labels on their feet also!

I didn't mention... I really appreciate what those girls are doing. Around where I live, I'm amazed at the number of teen bands who write all their own material. It's awesome to see a show with 4 or 5 local bands, all kids performing their own music. Acoustic acts, rock and metal of all kinds, even techno.

I haven't even told yous guys that Adam has left SSF to join a new outfit. The new one is a bit more "grown up - regular rock". All college guys. Details as they come in. He left this morning for Bonnaroo.

Its worse when you have them in plain sight hanging on the wall and still get confused which is which.

Plastic zip ties. They come in all sorts of colors, are impossible to take off without cutting them, are unobtrusive, and when you go to a music party, it's easy to identify all your stuff when it's time to leave. Canterbury String Shop has red ones on cases, amps, cords, mike stands, anything that I use outside the shop. Some of my friends use other colors.

I have a smiley face on my Pacemaker.

Nothing on my Country Artist. Both are Brown cases.

The 1758 case is black and the 97 Collector cases has a brass plate on it.

My other 6 string has a Martin plate on it. Sorry I had to add that.

Most venues around here do not allow covers, even when there is no money changing hands. We can thank ASCAP and BMI. The consequence is the boom in writing original material for live performances. Then there's the digital home recording revolution and the apparent demise of major recording labels. Its an interesting time for young musicians.

Masking tape with the model number on it. I've had most on for 2 years, since gh1 used it to keep all the cases straight at his house for the first NW Gathering.

Spirit of adventure ........ The one that I open is the one I play. Sometime I find an old pal.
Mind you I only have my own to worry about.

Mine are all hanging, so most of the cases are in the attic (small house). I try to keep one case for each bowl depth in my music room closet, since I rarely take more than one guitar with me when playing somewhere other than home.

John, is your house shaded or something? I think if I stored my cases in my attic, they'd be big gooey puddles the next time I checked on them!

Partially shaded, but it's also pretty well ventilated. Generally doesn't get above 100 up there.

Three hard cases in brown (Pacemaker),new black (Legend), old black (Ballader), two soft cases each a different style for the Hamer and the Dean strat. So far, not too hard to know which is which. :)
