It's been said by knowledgeable people here on a prior thread that top grading is more often than not cosmetic rather than tonal. Sometimes a tonally superior top will be downgraded because of some minor cosmetic flaw, so don't fall into the "must have highest graded" trap. Caveat: "same beast" only applies to those made in the same time frame - i.e. those with TRCs.

I'm going to see if they'll send me a 1617 with in good great shape for the $ I've already spent on the cracked 1619.

Some do, some don't. All 1617's with the Kaman bar have A bracing, however many of the older truss rod ones have a different bracing, VT, which many folks here don't like. The A bracing is superior to the VT for acoustic tone.

A bracing is unique in appearance and if you know what it looks like you can see it just by looking inside the soundhole. Most notable are the two longitudinal braces that parallel to the grain and have a "kink" or bend right at the soundhole. The bend is reinforced with a small metal strip, about 1/4" by 1 /12" which is glued to thunderside of the braces. You can look in the soundhole and see these reiforcing strips. Sometimes the bracing is visible thru the top, but that's mostly on sunburst ones.

"Today I was checking out the case that comes with the other ovation and it really reeks of smoke and there were a few other small issues with the frets on the guitar, At this point I am going to recomend that we just refund your money on the first guitar. I am very sorry for everything, I just don't want to send you a guitar that isn't 100% perfect. I wish the best in your search for the right guitar for your son."
