Although this IS a fixer-upper, it looks as though it could be revived. The finish cracks are the big snafu, but I bet it still sounds nice.

Ebay ... 1537

I am the current high bidder although I don't think I will last into the final five minutes.

Can't tell if those are finish only cracks or if, due to the replaced bridge, they are top cracks.

It is beat but if playable for a time, would make a great Factory redo!

I was thinking the same thing. The cracks look to me to be the infamous finish cracks. If you can pick it up for that much, it would still be a good rework guitar. I sent my 1537 in to the mothership to to have it gone over. The only thing I complained about when I sent it in was the electronics needed replaced and the backside/bowl paint was chipped. When I got it back it had a brand new bowl, new electronics, a fresh setup, a small finish crack repair, and the top buffed out. Price tag: $400. A good investment as far as I'm concerned. That headstock can be easily repaired also. Once stripped down along with the neck, the small depression can be steamed out. The wood fibers will swell back. The tuners appear to be pitted also. Anyway ... it's still a 1537 and repairable.

I would not worry about it. First of all the sunburst 1537's sound better to start with. And one with a few cracks to loosen up the top has got to be just awesome. Go for it !!!

Tuppy, just curious why you feel the sunburst sounds better. Is that just because you have been able to compare numerous 1537's or do you feel that way about all sunbursts?

I know my '87 collectors from Samova is a sunburst and sound fantastic but I have never had another '87 (or sunburst) to compare it to.

After a few beers and no sleep at the (YSBT!)OFC gathering it was a group consensus that the best tops are the ones that are are on the verge of exploding anyway. This one is just a little closer.

Truthfully, I had about six beers and two glasses of wine the whole outing!

Most of which were left sitting somewhere as someone handed me yet another luscious guitar!

That sounds like Cliff's intake on the way to the lobby from his hotel room.

Tuppy's sunburst top theory needs to go in a book with his painted bowl interior theory and string tubes. I seem to recall that black Classics sounded better than naturals when he had one, too.
