Location: Brighty in Blighty | Been listening to Kaki King in preparation to seeing her live here in the UK (land of crumpets etc).
Just wondering how she gets 'that' sound, i.e. a full and deep but kinda of an 'excited' zingy sound?
Is it just that she uses a Adamas? Is that the Adamas sound? It certainly sound like a deep bowl in any case.
Now as mentioned before I fell in love with Ovations because of Adrian Legg and I think he used various Os including non Adamas.
I guess I knew where this all would lead, i.e. to an Adamas but just wondering what your thoughts were on how to achieve that lovely tone. If it is the Adamas sound then whats the cheapest way to achieve it?

Location: Central Massachusetts | The Adamas is certainly a big factor. Technique. Alternate tunings. Interesting string guages, I'd imagine. Her dad (Popcritic) pops in here on occasion to report on her accomplishments. Maybe he can elaborate. You might search the archives a bit too, as I seem to recall there was some discussion of her effects at one point.
Bottom line, yes, you NEED an Adamas. :-) |

That video pretty much confirmed what I thought - boo hoo hoo, another Adamas convert...
So out of the 100s of different Adamas where would one start, bearing in mind I'm on a tight budget and don't need a 'fancy' guitar... |

Location: Scotland | I thought the guitar sound on her first Album was absolutely stunning, certainly among the best recorded acoustic guitar sounds I've heard. Great combination of miked and direct, big, big sound. Whoever engineered that album really knew what they were doing. I've never liked her live tone, or Adrian Legg's or Preston Reeds for that matter. Adrian Legg hasn't used an Ovation or an Adamas for almost a decade. I like his tone even less now. |
