Joined: June 2006 Posts: 17 Location: Los Angeles | My buddy saw my Elite ($335 shipped with case - thanks to member Paul Blanchard) and wants one just like it to get started. Here are the criteria: - cosmetic flaws are fine (desired to make it fit budget - hopefull fundmentals are good - working order, straight neck, no soundboard cracks - veneer cracks acceptable) - American made preferred - Like Epaulets style sound holes - Cutaway - Mid or deep bowl for accoustic play - Same price range Its a chance to clear out low end of your collection! Thanks, Michael

Joined: June 2006 Posts: 17 Location: Los Angeles | Thanks for the Post. Its a little over budget but I will run it by my friend. I may need something a little more beat up to be fair at target price. However, I am curious... How is cedar different from spruce in tone? Thanks, Michael

Joined: September 2005 Posts: 3619 Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | It's difficult to make a comparison, since my spruce-top Elite is older than my cedar top one. I DID attempt to make a good comparison a couple months ago, by puting the same brand and gauged strings (Adamas 1818s) on the two AND my 1581 Adamas, and laying the three of them side-by-side. I did everything I could think of from strumming, finger-picking, arpeggios, plucking each individual string, harmonics, checking sustain, volume, and tone. The 1581 Adamas had a noticeable louder bottom end. Between the two Elites the 83 Spruce top was sweeter on the "Quality Gauge", but that cutaway cedar top played easier and a friend who was with me said he liked the sound and playability better (I think it was because of the bare-natural finish). I would personally describe it as having a more airier tone. Aside from the Ovations having a better sound in my opinion, it was like comparing a Martin and a Gibson in their comparable models.

The 1617 Legend has a very boomy bass (which I tend to attribute to a monster crack in the top) and I find that when I play it I have to work to keep the treble balanced. Much like I had to when I had my old HD28. As for my Pacemaker, I have reached the conclusion that I am pretty inept with a 12 string. MWoody refers to a wall of sound, in my case it is more of a barrier to my music. My 2005-ES is great for fingerstyle and it has an XLR so it is my choice when I need to plug in. Hard strumming produces a (to me) and unpleasantly confused muddle of sound. FD14 and the 1768C seem to have a nice full acoustic sound (some describe this as warmth I think) that sounds very nice with quiet fingerstyle yet accommodates hard strumming as well. When I had my Adamus, I found that the 'cleaness' of the tone left me with a feeling that the guitar sounded a little thin. It had plenty of volume and played easily, you couldn't strum too hard, and fingerstyle always sounded very clean. I always thought of it as a great acoustic for electric guitar players. I tried a UTE at a local GC. Volume again was impressive, playability was faultless. But it's tone did not speak to me. Both of my cedars speak to me and if your friend decides this guitar is out of budget, I won't mind. I'm really not trying to sell it. It's just part of my O-mission in life that I tend to lend out my guitars to promote music in general and O's in particular. Selling one of my favorites didn't seem too much of a stretch. But the window will be closing soon as sanity resumes it's place in my life. My cedar Elite is a nice little guitar that I'd kind of like to keep.

I need to consider selling so I have a cash flow when a "Dream" guitar becomes available. $300.00 with OHSC.

Should be shipping this week and we jam this weekend. Thanks to everyone for input and advice. I will keep the ceder top and Norseman's balladeer in mind if I can convert some more friends to wannabee guitarists. Cheers, Michael
