Location: big island | In the first few weeks of 1959, the same year Hawaii achieves statehood, a major volcanic eruption takes place in the "backyard" of Kapoho town's residents on the Big Island of Hawaii. Nearly everything you see in this video is currently buried under 50 feet of lava. Only a couple structures survived. I discovered this 3 1/2 minute silent film among the reels of 8mm family films that a friend of mine contracted me to digitize for her. I took the liberty to add music, sound effects and narration to this clip. The opening music is "Pupu A'o Ewa" by The Cazimero Brothers. The narrative and closing music is "Hawai'i Pono'i" on Jack DeMello's "Music of Hawai'i" CD. For further and very interesting information regarding this eruption please check out this link: http://vhca.info/docs/1959.pdf |

Location: big island | thank you, folks.
the ground has been a bit shaky around here lately and kilauea is much more active than usual. we may soon see the sort of eruption depicted in those films. i live about 40 miles from the current lava flows and feel relatively safe for the moment. |
