I have a '93 USA 1711 Balladeer in emerald green I need to sell. It is also in mint condition. I will be selling it with a hard-shell case, Planet Waves humidifier system, Schaller strap locks, a leather strap, a Dunlop capo, and 3 sets of Martin strings (in hopes of sweetening the deal). I checked the Orion Blue Book value price and it came up with $620.00.

What would be a good price to sell it at? I've had it listed on eBay and I didn't get any bids. I've also had it listed on the Seymour Duncan forum on and off for a few months now and it hasn't been doing to good over their either. I started the price at $650 a few months ago (before I looked up the OBB value) and I've been reducing the price ever since. I also offer it with free shipping in the US and I have a verified Pay Pal account, have pics, etc.

So any tips? What do these usually sell for?

Thanks,
Eric

The Orion books were developed for pawn shops and music stores as guidelines for buying used equipment low and selling high. The price you were asking is close to the discounted new price for them back when you bought yours. I might also add that one can buy a nice used Legend for less than your price, and that upgrade wouldn't be a tough decision.

Perhaps a better way to get an idea on current market value is to look at completed auctions on eBay. I just took a quick peek and found a couple of 1711's. The one that sold for the highest went for $450. The other for a lot less.

You'll find numerous threads on how best to sell on eBay by searching the archives, and that might be helpful. There is a lot of collective wisdom on this board when it comes to buying and selling Ovations. I've sold a few myself on eBay. I think you already have good ideas on how to sell yours but are idealistic on the value.

Blessings on a good sale for you.

Thanks for that reply. I really didn't know where to start in trying to sell this thing! Looks like I am in need of a price drop!

Thanks,
Eric

They had a green Balladeer at GC a few months ago. I can't remember how old it was, but it seems like it was about the same vintage. I think they wanted $400 for it, but my memory is fading.

Good Luck Buddy... I have a 1994? 1711 (natural) in great condition...couldn't get a sniff from the OFC at $300.00. Decided to keep her rather than give her away. Not a popular guitar I guess. I've seen them sell for between $325.00 and $400.00 on ebay if you go that route...I think $350 is probably a fair price.

Paul Blanchard was being particularly kind to you in his post. He's got LOTS of experience buying/selling on eBay. First of all forget about the extras (strap, capo strings, etc) as that stuff does zero to increase the value. You have a really nice guitar buit it's got two problems: 1) it's a Balladder which is the low end of USA Ovations, and 2) many don't want a green guitar, as nice as yours may be.

A well composed ad in eBay with lots of good photos (both indoors and out in sunlight) might get you $450 or so, but not more and maybe less. Also charge something for shipping. A low shipping price ($20-$25) actually helps to sell the item.

You have to be realistic about your expectations. You don't say why you need to sell the guitar, but like Norseman says it might be best to keep it rather than give it away.

I made a new ad. I will take these suggestions and work it out. I am trying to lower the reserve eBay lowers it and then it puts it back the old one. Weird.

Looks like I am going to need some more photos.

I'm selling it because I need the money.

I bid on it to move it along, and obviously there are other bids. Good luck!

I would work on bringing down that $60 shipping. I can ship a full size guitar with case in the US via UPS for under $40.
Go to GC and get a Kaman box.

Agreed. I shipped an acoustic to Portland OR from NYC packed well, but with a gig bag (no hard case) for 20 bucks.

Helpful hint #29:

UPS to a Commercial address is a little cheaper than a Residential address.

If I can't be home for a guitar/big purchase, I like to ship to my UPS Store.

Alright I will bring that shipping price down.

Edit. I hate eBay. I go to revise the item, I click on the "Add Payment and Shipping" section, but their is nothing about shipping charges. I guess it is because I have bids. Oh well. I will know for next time.
