The add says no serial number can be found. Isn't there a serial number on the back of the headstock?...

Here is the email I sent him this morning:
Hello: Original Adamas guitars had a textured (rough) finished top because of the carbon fiber used in the construction of the tops. The guitar you have is an SMT Adamas...nicknamed smooth top. Ovation/Adamas (Kaman Music Group) did not make this guitar until 1998..any prototypes would have been made no earlier than 1996...here is the link to their timeline/website: http://www.adamasguitars.com/?fa=history1
A very nice guitar but not as old as you think.
No reply as yet...I'm not holding my breath.
Blessings...

I heard from the seller, nice enough guy it seems. Maybe he'll join the discussion.

Good Day, gentlemen...I'm the Sorry S.O.B. who has tons of guitars, small knowledge, and a "Market Spin" mentality according to one of you! The guitar has no serial number in the normal places. What can I say? I posted a big cuddo?(spelling) to steve and mischa on my ebay listing and would like to know how you tell a SMT from a Rough-top? Be gentle, I'm frail...

Um... SMT is a smooth shiny top, and a textured top is... well, textured, and not shiny.

Wabbit, don't be silly...If you'd like to describe the difference in detail...You see, there are other adamas' posted on ebay that are shinier and smoother than mine, and I can feel the grain, so I'm still confused...

Well, you said you were fragile!

The original Adamas tops were 'textured'. The best way I can describe them is a rough heavy cloth that's been painted. IMO still the best sounding tops Adamas has made to date.

SMT is a unidirectional carbon-fiber top which has a smooth, shiny finish and the carbon fibers can be seen.

CVT is a cross-weave carbon-fiber top which can be finished to be either smooth (W597) or textured (1680, 2080).

Mister M,
Welcome...first of all, I don't recall reading here in this forum anyone speaking unkind of you; personally I'm glad to have you join our discusions. Seems that Wabbit has done a fine job of explaining the top differences in Adamas guitars. We'll be glad to help you in anyway we can and hope you'll take note that we're sometmes a bit disfunctional but what family isn't? As I said before, you have a very nice guitar and I hope you get out of it what you are wanting to.
Blessings...

Hi M.

Welcome and please don't misinterpret my comment about "marketing spin". I meant that in the kindest way. By the way, my day job is sales and marketing and I've been called by the name of every body oriface in the book. It pays the bills.

"Vintage" is highly subjective. Compared to a new guitar maybe a 15 year old one would be considered vintage. Compared to a 30 year old one it's probably considered not even broken in yet. Highly subjective.

But it does look like a cool guitar and I'm sure you will have no trouble to sell it for a good price.

Dave
