Tell me what would you pay for
1. 1990 Ovation Collector's, Birdseye, deep bowl
2. 1992 Ovation Collector's, flame, shallow bowl
3. 1994 Ovation Collector's, round hole, mid bowl
4. 2003 Ovation Collector's, Elite style, mid bowl

I can't speak for other members, but for me the prices for these Collectors guitars were too high relative to other Ovation models being sold here and on ebay. Don’t get me wrong, Collectors are very nice guitars! But, my point is how can earlier model Collectors compare with Ovation's current USA product lines that are selling for less money and may have better features (electronics, bracing, etc…)? That’s the nature of guitars and I’ve been bitten more than blessed when it comes to buying and selling guitars.

I owned a 2003 Collectors and I searched this forum, the web and ebay for another one recently. As has been discussed quite a bit on this forum by long standing members who contribute quite a bit to this forum, today’s Collectors are valuable if you want to get features that may not be on other guitars. Unfortunately, those features are making their way onto other Ovations within a couple years (or less now!). So, although buyers paid a premium to get new features, they are now on other series models for less money.

For example, how much should the 2003 Collectors sell if a 1771-LX with OP-Pro Studio can be purchased for $565? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=25010717824...

Jason S. continued to lower the price for his Adamas to $650. http://www.ovationfanclub.com/cgi-bin/ubb/non-cgi/ultimatebb.php?ub...

The other challenge I have about buying Ovations in general is there are so many other guitars out there that are in the same price range as Ovations (Larrivee, Blueridge, Martin 16 series, Guild, etc…) that are all wood boxes and may sound better than the Ovation when they are played unplugged. That isn’t to say Ovations aren’t worthy because they are. It’s a matter of how much are they worth compared to other guitars from other manufacturers as well as Ovation. Look at what CA is doing with graphite! How will a used Adamas stack up to new/used CA guitars?

I don’t want to belabor my point any more and I apologize if my message came across misunderstood because I’m actually trying to be helpful. I think the Collectors are beautiful guitars. I’m sure these guitars will make someone very happy! Good luck with your sale and I hope that my feedback was received in the spirit in which it was sent. Sorry if it wasn’t. If I had to put a price on the ’03 Collectors I would say $500. Much lower than what it is probably worth to you, but I can’t see it being worth more than a lightly used 1771-LX. I could be wrong, so please chime in and don’t worry about educating me. Won’t be the first time!

No, I can take any constructive criticism and like to be educated myself. It just amazes me how older Collector's may have had some nicer appointments but your right, newer models with lighter bowls and better preamps just do sound better. Asthetics are for the collector, modern electronics and better construction is for the player. But someone must be able to appreciate and want these guitars. The 1990 Collector is like a tank, but the birdseye top, bound neck, 24 frets just amazes me on how beautiful an instrumnet it really is. It's funny the 2003 Collector sounds the best unplugged and plugged in. OP40 preamp and maybe just a good board but it is crisp with bottom end and not that plastic sound associated with Ovations. Well, they may sell, or someday they may melt doen the bowls for fuel!
Thank you for your time and comments.

John, contact Erniewan about the 90 Collector's if you haven't already. He may be interested if the price is right.

The market is fickle, John. I've seen prices ebb and flow ... it's all about timing. Your prices posted on the other thread seemed reasonable to me ... but Ovations, especially Collectors, aren't the kind to you if you hold a fire sale. My advice is keep the prices where they are but reset your expectations for WHEN they will sell. It may take months. FWIW, all of your Collectors are particularly unique ... the 90 Maple with 16 frets free, the 92 Tamo Ash, and the 94 which I personally think is very underrated ... Optima, cool mahogany/maple/ebony neck, great top, unusual rosette. They are all worth at least what you're asking for near mint guitars. The 2003 didn't really do too much for me tho, sorry. ;)

John, I always buy high and sell low. I just seem to hit the market at the wrong time. I`ts been a while but i think i sold my 92 collectors for $500.00. I gave $400.00 for my Folklore and just lost my butt on a trade. When i first started hanging around here seems like most Folklores went for around $700.00, i got mine and could not give it away. Good luck

John, listen to what stonebobbo said (especially what he said about the 94. I absolutely agree ;) ) . We have a buyer's market now - bad time to sell stuff.

It is not the newer guitars with better preamps, it's the timing. Maybe, if they were textured top Adamaii, they have been sold already. These Adamas models seem to sell quite fast, not depending on seasons or whatever.
It's tax time, christmas presents are bought months ago - wait for autumn, if you can. You will get the price you want, if you got the breath.

I can tell, it is the same over here in germany. Good time for bargains, bad time to make money.

These "old" Ovations have their market, not everybody is heading for scalopped bracing and other LX-features.

Best regards,
Kurt

I also agree with the other members that timing is very much a part of the market and it can change at anytime.

John posted these guitars on another thread and I thought he was interested in selling them quickly because he over extended himself.

I based my feedback on his inquiry why they weren't selling. I figured it was price because they would sell faster if they were cheaper.

Hope I didn't sound like a jerk. Sorry if I did because that's not what I wanted to do.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Regards,
Mark

John, You are getting good advise from stonebobbo.

Your '92 looks like it has the dark burst edge which I have not seen many of. My '92s have the lighter burst.

aceboympk, Jason said, "...make me an offer over $650...". My understanding is that the Adamas went for a respectable amount.

Thank you all for your words and advise. I am just glad I don't "need" to sell guitars due to unfortunate circumstances like I've seen so many other unlucky guys did. I do believe as it has been said it is a matter of timing & market. They are beautiful guitars and don't get the respect they deserve. Noah, the '92 is gorgeous and even with the shallow body and older preamp sounds great. It is like playing an electric. I've also found that when playing thru a modern acoustic amp with an eq & effects really upgrades the electronics of older Ovations. I have gotten some low ball prices and I am not offended, but sometimes you feel like your floating in deep waters with sharks below and vultures above. But after all they are just guitars whether they are Martins, Gibson or Ovations!!!! Hey, this is better than going to a therapist!
