When my father passed away about 10 years ago, I (as a 12-year-old) inherited his guitars, including two Ovations. I'm a petite girl with tiny hands, and I never thought I'd stand a chance at playing the 12-string (don't know the model off the top of my head, but it's early 80s). When I finally decided to take a chance, I discovered that one of the pearl tuning caps was cracked, thus making it impossible to turn and tune the string. I've looked everywhere for a replacement. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I could get one? I don't really want to replace all of the machine heads for just a small piece of plastic (however, I also don't want to replace it with one that doesn't match the rest).

Any ideas? Thanks for your time!

Hello Sara and welcome...someone may have a spare here in the club...or you could contact John Bundy at the Ovation Service Dept: jbudny-kmc@kaman.com...
Cut and paste what you wrote here and he'll be glad to help you.
Again welcome to the club!
Blessings...

My guess is that you have a 1115 Pacemaker, 12th fret to body Slothead. Here are some spares from a six string. You most likely have the smaller tuning buttons.

I checked, and wow, MWoody...you're good! :)

Mine are 3/4" and the shape appears to be a bit different, too.

Thanks, MusicMishka, for the advice! I'll probably wait a couple of days, and then email John. My boyfriend is dying to be able to play this guitar (he has never liked Ovations, but loves my 12-string and my Patriot), and I am, as well :)

When you're old you forget to zip your pants up. When you're really old you forget to unzip them.

Gee Sara, I understand your frustration with not being able to find a Pearloid knobbie-thing.
[UPS is bringing me a 1115, with the same kinda knobbie-things.]

But that would not keep me from playing it.

That is why God invented Pliers!

I'm a girl...I don't know how to use tools :)

Just kidding...I suppose that works. But I also have a little bit of OCD, so if I'm playing a guitar that has 11 and is missing 1...I may just freak out. And we wouldn't want that now, would we?!

How about I trade you my cracked knobbie-thing for one of your non-cracked knobbie-things :p

Mine just left Salt Lake City at 4:30 local time, according to UPS.
So I'm still waiting for mine.

As to-- "How about I trade you my cracked knobbie-thing for one of your non-cracked knobbie-things?"

NO! :( [not trying to mean or nuthin']

Hey Sara, after I typed that smartass remark, I searched for 20 minutes for those little knobby things...
I guess this is the best place to look, cuz I sure can't find em on the web.

So Sorry :(

Just turn the lights on & off seven times, and everything'll be fine . . .

"...a little bit of OCD..."

Now there's a subject for the BFLG to discuss over a few Beers, how much OCD is too much (or not enough)?

Of course I don't suffer from it, just those around me...

Sara, I'm thinking that if you file a couple of notches in the stem and use some clear epoxy you can get the tuner button to stay on for a season. If the repair stands out just apply a little pearl nail polish.

And lastly - when my daughter was a youngling I told a string of bedtime stories where the protangonist would find a light switch that had been installed sideways (so it read OZ) and after three cycles the first door she opened would... well I don't want to ruin the ending for you. She never approached an oddly installed light switch the same way again.

Then we started reading the ingredients labels on food and it ruined everything.

Mike, I have the same problem. I always seem to be surrounded by angry, irritated people. Funny.
