Location: SoCal | in previous posts...discussion about the playability and "voice" between an Adamas I 1688 and the Adamas II 1685. I can't tell the difference and I would guess others can't. Main difference is the headstock and bridge.
Real difference is about a thousand dollars. Can't get a 1688, then at least grab a 1685.
Maybe not current prices but what I would expect...
1688 $2,200-$2,600 for used
1685 $1,200-$1,600 for used
Special/Custom order would be a lot more...would need to have a dealer quote it out (my dealer is Al.) Only New Jersian I would trust with my wallet (he has my credit card on file).
I have had a couple of emails if I would sell one. Stephen said I had a bunch. Only have two Adamas 12's plus four Custom Legends, an early shiny bowl, a Hamer Newport, a Wurlitzer, a 1688, and a 1685. Personally, if I did offer either of my -8's, min bid would be $2,800 for the 1688, $1,800 for the 1685. Why? 'cause I don't want to sell. :D
All seriousness, try to find a 1685. You won't lose any money if you want a 1688 later. Either way, you have a fantastic 12-string. |

price or value is relative to your GAS...GAS is relative to whether you have to make the decision to buy based on a description and photos or if you had the opportunity inspect and to play it, GAS may increase.
Pre-amp? Anything from a 2-knob to an OP-50 w/XLR - unless you have a special use (i.e., need for EQ), only a reflection of the guitar's age. Even though the OP-50 w/XLR is a major improvement, IMHO the early models with just a vol/tone command a higher price.
Color? The original -8 blue seems to be the most popular which means the more potential bidders (supply and demand). Fortunately, I like the -7 (and now the -2) which means I saved a few $'s.
Are all of the 12-strings the same? My 1688 was a special order based on the original specs (delivered 12/04). The neck is different than the 1685 - the feel of the 1685 is closer to a 1681 or 1687 6-string (as the Custom Legend 12-slothead or standard headstock is closer to the Custom Legend 6). Of course, the 12-string neck is wider than a 6-string but I am talking about the depth and shape. The 1688 is about half way between an Adamas II and a Martin. Great neck, maybe only noticeable the first few times you play it or if you've been playing an Ovation or Adamas 6-string for a period of time and then pick up the 1688.
There is a difference in the weight of the neck. However, with a good strap, the extra weight of the 1688 is not noticeable.
Problem with all of this is that you usually have to buy to try. Only if someone lives close enough to you or you go to a regional get-together will you know. The first 1687, the 1685, and the 1688 - only opportunity I had to try was to buy one first.
Warning, if you try a textured top...U681T, 1681, 1685, 1687, 1688, 47RI, or the OFC - this conversation is over, there is no going back.
So take the plunge or find one you can play. |

Location: Buffalo,NY | When it comes to a 12 string(or even a 6) I prefer to have an onboard tuner as I have become spoiled; however now that I think about it my PRS 12 String doesn't have one.
One 1688 has the Optima electronics with tuner and one has the OP-24 with only volume and 3 band EQ. One is Blue and one is black; $500 difference in asking price.
Many decisions to make

(if you play it acoustic, neither matters)
I'm good at spending your money. Now if it was my money, $500 is a major consideration.
[Especially since $419 is the most I've paid for any of my guitars... So far! :p ]

Plus, I don't think the fingerprint thing is anything to worry about on textured top guitars. My UTE never did show any, nor did my 1681. (satin finish and all) |
