just got back from the show.

It was fantastic.
if you don't know him get to know his music. he is killer.

great tone

great drummer and bass player

and it was all free

my only regret was the Gerald malanga interpretive dance troup in front of the stage.

(I wonder who will get that reference No google it's cheating)

also saw an old ghost from the past........

Were Lou Reed and Nico also in attendance?

I like Sonny and have a couple of his early CD's. Haven't listened to him lately or heard any of his recent stuff.

Guess it's time to dig the CD's out an pop them in the player.

Al, saw Sonny at the Tulsa Blues Fest a few years back. Saw a lot of acts; saw BB King (awestruck), Sardinas (he's out there, and it's great!), but Sonny really threw me for a loop. American Original doesn't even begin to describe him. He's the king of his domain, but noone else is in there. One of the best shows I've ever witnessed.

second that.
I saw him once for a show at the Iron Horse in NorthHampton. Had to sit in the front row. like 6 feet away from him. Watching his hands when he plays is totally amazing, haven't been the same since.

did you google that?

Nico has been dead for many years. I had the opportunity to see her perform several times before her untimely death.

Nope.....one of those "forgotten" memories from back in the day. I almost choked on my slurpy when I read that. Your post jogged a few dead brain cells.

Check out Sonny's new CD, "From the Reach". Amazing album, Clapton, knopfler, Eric Johnson and a few other guest artists, but it is definitely Sonny's show. He is not only an incredible guitarist but a great songwriter.

I would love to see him live.

Been There/Done That.

When that album came out, WNEW-FM would reLENTlessly play it around the time I was driving a VW Beetle.

I still carry the emotional scars . . .

(tho, I'm admittedly a fan of "Rock & Roll Animal" - but ONLY the first & last tracks - and, ONLY because of the performance-value of his band).

You cant beat Sonny. I have seen Johh Hiatt almost 20 times and Hiatt always has a GREAT slide player but Sonny is THE GREATEST hands down. Sonny is featured in a Blues mag. this mo. and it talks about how he cords behind the slide Hell I cant slide much less slide and cord. Everyone shold go Buy SLOW TURNING by Hiatt w/Sonny on slide its a must.

"Slow Turning" is a great album, but it was the second attempt. The first version had Dave Mattacks on drums, John Doe (fron "X") on bass and Lindley on lap steel. A&M refused to release it because it was as loose and raggy as hell and they made Hiatt re-record it with Sonny and the Goners, who he'd hired as his road band for the "Bring The Family" tour. Most of the really killer slide licks on the official release were actually Lindley's from the first attempt. 10 or so years ago Mattacks gave me a cassette copy of the original master. From a technical standpoint I can understand why they wanted to can it, but in terms of sheer feel and balls It's pretty amazing. I always listen to that rather than the official release.

Just to clarify, Sonny played on the second version, but a lot of the phrases he was playing were created by Lindley on the aborted version.
