Location: Philly | Hello folks,
New member here; I apologize in advance if I'm posting this in the wrong part of the forum.
I am interesting in selling my black, early-80s Ultra GS II (dual humbucker, tremolo bridge). It has two fixable dings in it (one unfixed, one poorly fixed). But it plays and sounds fine.
My question is, do any of you have advice as to which of the following options I should choose:
1. Sell it as is. It's not a vintage guitar, but it's old guitar with a nice, shiny, original paint job. Maybe someone would prefer it that way...with a little age on it.
2. Get it fixed cosmetically (get the dings repaired). Don't touch the original electronics. It will therefore still play and sound the same as it always has.
3. Get it upgraded. Replace the pickups and the bridge. Maybe update the look with chrome knobs, etc. It should sound better than the original, but it won't be an original guitar anymore.
In short, the question is, Is Option 3 likely to net me more money for my guitar?
Thanks in advance. |

I personally do not purchase modded/upgraded guitars if I can help it. All original vintage/classic guitars will normally bring the highest price.
As to repairs, that's a buyers personal choice. Some folk prefer to evaluate the damage/flaws themselves rather than trust the sellers decision.
Pictures are always encouraged!
BTW, to the OFC. The veteran welcoming committee will be here shortly... |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I'd go option 1, too. I have one just like it. Assuming yours has the Kahler Flyer bridge, that's probably worth more than the guitar. The ones that have been modified usually don't sell or go for less on ebay than the original ones, even if the ads talk about how much money they spent putting in new pickups etc. You could easily put $500 into what will never be more than a $200 guitar. |

Location: Philly | Seems there is a consensus here! Thanks to all for your advice.
P.S., to Mark, yes it does have the Kahler Flyer bridge.
Off to the bay it goes, I'll see what I can get for it.
Thanks again for all the help. |

And a damn shame they are not worth more.
They are a huge bang for buck guitar.

Location: Boise, Idaho | greddy, you might try it here first. They are as AJ says, but I've seen a few on ebay that just don't get anywhere because people don't appreciate them. You're not as likely to find a sucker here, but you're also not as likely to find a deadbeat buyer as you are on ebay. |

Thanks again to all for the advice.
