Location: Maine | Hello folks, It's been quite a long time since I've posted here so there's lots to catch up on...
I'd like to share a discovery I've recently come across that may be intersting to some of you on this site.
I took the shot of the guitar hanging at my sister's apt. . Many years ago my father worked for Ovation Instruments so it was not uncommon to see Ovations guitars around the house. She had removed the guitar from my parents attic many years ago and I never knew she had it until I spotted it during may latest visit with her in CT (last week).

I'd like to hear the history on this one.. notice the wooden rosette , Very Cool. It's actually inset slightly into the top much like the original shinybowl rosettes. It also Appears to have a cedar top. What's also pretty intersting is that I have also recovered from the same attic what I believe to be a rough rosette carving still in the walnut blank. (see pics in the link).
This may actually have been a playable guitar at some point in time, until she ignorantly put steel strings on a clasical guitar, which really sucks. if you could only see what she's done to an old shinybowl 3-pcs-top model.. Uggh! :(

Location: Maine | Very Cool.. I've been in contact w/ Mike Woodford and he mentioned that that guitar was making it's way across the world. Mike tried to get me to join him at his OFC gathering in July, but it simply wasn't possible. I dont't actually know if the Deacon guitar made it to his gathering or not? Without a doubt, I recall that guitar as a youth. It was also one that got away... Thanks for the info...

I think you got the guess right, those were prototypes and just trying out ideas. The original ones had a bad way of warping and coming unglued. I've never seen one with the actual rosette made from wood like that but they had to be trying out ideas back then.
I remember seeing the flat wooden carving.
In the end these didn't make it into production because they are too expensive to produce and I think the raised surface would be very ncomfortable for playing. They look good though. |

Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | Wow. I was just thinking about your Dad the other day. He was one of the most wonderful people I ever knew, and one of the smartest. It seemed no matter what subject came up, from guitars to the cost of rice in China, he knew more about it than any encyclopedia. He was generous in sharing that knowledge too. All of us in inspection adored him and spoke with pride about knowing such a fine man. I'm sorry that you lost him at such a young age. The world is a better place though, that he existed, and my life is better for having known him. God bless you. |

Certainly a cool idea, I could see how it would be hard to produce economically. Thanks for your fast response... Amongst the boxes of "stuff" ... I've found a few other prototype/concept ideas to share as well. ..I just need to get the pics uploaded. .. Tal

Location: Maine | Looking at the photos some more. (The guitar is still in CT) ,This odd guitar seems to have once had a rear bowl acess panel??
Also note the wood (walnut) body binding similar to the early elites.
