I love the smell of wood in guitars, however, I'm not getting that pleasant odor with most guitars that have rosewood back and sides. As stated in the subject line, is it my nose playing tricks with me, or is it the wood itself?

Why would you want to sniff anything but uncured lyrachord resin?

My d28 is almost three years old and still almost knocks me over with the scent of rosewood. I think it helps a lot to keep it in it's case and properly humidified.

What kind of rosewood guitar do you have?

Ditto what BrianT says... My D-28 stinks wonderfully. So do my other wood guitars and I keep all of them in their cases with humidifacation units in each. I also have some sweet smelling lyachord resin in my stable. Love all the flavors.

Hmm.

To smell something, it means that particles are releasing (osmosis?) and becoming airborn then entering your olfactory system (nose).

Wood oils and Lyrachord resins (binary resin) are the more likely suspects. This would mean that you can smell the wood drying out?

If you hang the instrument the smell would be harder to pick up on.

Last Tour, John in Customer Service sent me some shop sweepings of Ebony, Mahogany and Rosewood. Best dang potpouri you ever experienced!!

My Custom Legend and my ( :p ) Ute smell completely different. Why is that? (Serious question), is it an Ovation/Adamas thing?

I've got a 1917 0018 Martin. I love the smell of it. Don't play it much, but smell it all the time....

Do all Adamas have wood sandwiched in the tops?

Thank you guys for clarifying my silly inquiry. When I pick up a guitar, especially brand new ones that come fresh out of the box, the smell is quite apparent that taking a big whiff is not necessary.

I have/had my share of owning some great and many not-so-great guitars, but at least, every single one of them were purchased new. I have a Martin HD-28 which is entering my 4th month of ownership, with spruce top and rosewood back and sides, and the smell is pretty much tolerable. Scentwise, I prefer the smell of my 2-year old DM, despite that the back and sides are made of laminated mahogany.

The one I couldn't stand is my recently acquired Takamine. About a month ago, I purchased a Korean-made EG522C nylon string, but I was having major buzzing problems with it. I had it professionally set-up with high tension strings, but the problems persisted. Even the replacement that I got one week later showed the same problems, despite being given a set-up by the shop owner himself. After three weeks, I had enough that I decided to upgrade to a EC132C model(paid a little extra for the difference). Fresh out of the box, this Japanese-made guitar really sings, without the flaws of its Korean-made cousin. But it's the smell of this guitar that I can't stand, and I'm guessing that perhaps it just might be the wood that it's constructed from. All I know about this Tak is that it has a spruce top with rosewood back and sides, which is quite unusual since I affiliated them for having tops made from cedar.

Anyway, thanks again for your replies. :)

Just as new car smell subsides into the owner's fragrance, so will your guitar.

You're absolutely right!

Right now, I'm leaving it out on a stand to allow the odor to subside. As for the case, I applied baking soda, sprayed it with febreeze and leaving it open as well.
