Joined: March 2006 Posts: 1634 Location: Chehalis, Washington | Question for any who might know. I was on vacation last year in San Diego and got to tour the Taylor factory while I was there (I know, I know...). I will say that I'm really liking the new T5 slimline that they are producing - good tone, materials, balance, etc. In looking around, (because no one near me seems to have one to try), does anyone know how the newer hollow-body Viper compares to something like Taylor's T5? Down the road, I plan to pick up a hollow electric, and would just as soon hear all sides.

Speaking of my partner, BrianT, he has owned a T5 for a while now. If we are all reeeal quiet, and if nobody makes any sudden moves to scare him, maybe....just maybe, he will chime in.

They manufacture Guild guitars there as well now that the Fender Group owns the Company. I know a few OFC/UMTF people around here. Andrew may be enamored by the T5 but he is hit with a good case of Viper GAS after loan of my Golden Viper! The bite won't kill you but you'll never be the same!

I am using it mostly in electric guitar type contexts (Full band with drums and bass), and also for a few recording projects. I still reach for my 1777LX for most open-mic type stuff. However the T5 produces a pleasing acoustic tone when plugged into a PA, but it's not as qiute as nice as a great true acoustic with good electronics. But one big plus for the T5 is that because it uses magnetic pickups, most effects pedals work great with it, effects pedals that don't work well with piezo equipped giutars like the 1777LX. I like the plugged-in tone and feel of the T5, It is light and well balanced and fun to play. I am not fond of the shorter scale, I think it looses some of the bass thump as a result. I use 12's on my T5 with a wound G string which is a little heavy compared to most electrics. Build wise and fit and finish it is wonderfull. And for people who prefer the "feel" of an acoustic guitar it makes a great electric guitar. Some of my electric guitar playing friends dont like the feel of it, but they string their guitars with 9's, my T5 is strung with 12's, but I like it that way. So far it's a keeper, but it really is more of an electric guitar. I really can't comment about the viper, I never tried one.
